To some extent ufology is modern folklore.

  1. “Automation could kill 800 million jobs within about 15 years.” And yet, in every conversation I’ve been in over the last couple of years that has discussed AI, robotics, and phone apps replacing human beings, the people involved insist that what THEY do in their jobs could NEVER be done by electronics. De-nile isn’t just a river in Egypt.

Having seen firsthand 150 care management nurses replaced by a care management application based on a decision algorithm, which needed only three tech staff to administer it, I’m not that sanguine. Clearly, in that case technology did not create as many jobs as it destroyed (Big Tech’s favorite bogus argument) . The net job loss in our small organization was 147, over half the staff.

Most people won’t believe how vulnerable their jobs are to technology until they’re handed their pink slips. Most countries desperately need a national technology policy as well as government oversight and regulation of technology. It’s not just about regulating privacy. There are bigger, wide-ranging devastating economic impacts very likely coming down the pike, and nobody’s prepared for them. This could be as or even more devastating than the impacts of climate change.
