Weekend Roundup 27-01-2006

A few things to keep you busy over the weekend…

  • Phenomena Magazine has a review, by Colin Bennett, of Patrick Huyghe’s Swamp Gas Times (Patrick is the fine gentleman behind The Anomalist).
  • Here’s a transcript of “Are Psychics For Real”, from Larry King Live earlier in the month.
  • The International Survivalist Society another historical essay available: “General Questions and Values of a Future Life“, by James Hyslop.
  • Wired has an essay about the recent speech by the Dalai Lama at a neuroscience conference, and the controversy surrounding it (pointing out, as I did quite a while back, that it is probably more grounded in political than scientific controversy).
  • Filer’s Files #3 and also #4 have the most recent UFO news from around the world (I’m playing catch-up).

Enjoy!

  1. Are psychics for real?
I saw that programme. There was very little in-depth examination of their claims, I felt. What became apparent to me was that Rabbi Boteach was incredibly rude, Dr Farha slightly less rude, and the three psychics quite amiable, but quite unconvincing. Char Margolis, however, appeared to ooze phoniness.

The most interesting thing about the programme was that all six individuals – the skeptic, the rabbi, the three psychics, and even the host, Larry King – were all Jewish. Did Larry King plan it this way? Are all psychics Jewish? Are all skeptics Jewish? What does it mean to be Jewish anyway?

The psychics came off pretty badly, but Rabbi Boteach’s arrogance made sure that the real loser on the night was Judaism.

More interesting was the fact that Sylvia Browne was proven to be a liar over the prediction of the deaths of the 12 miners in West Virginia 3 weeks ago. I would like to see Sylvia Browne go back on Larry King’s programme and answer to charges that she is a fraud. That would make for good television. And let’s have some goyim on for a change.
