Emerging from the Chrysalis

We’ve done a major upgrade on the Daily Grail backend software, and performed a number of other edits/changes on the site (such as the Google Ad). No doubt some weirdness will follow – please post any weirdness here and we’ll get to it as time allows.

    Hi Greg,

Well as it happens i’ve just taken a fish oil…as for bugs- it looks like i have to log in at everypage…you’ ve seemed to have reset the number of blogtitles back to ten and the mouseover displaying the number of comments doesnt work…
The merchandising a pity the design could have been more subtle a bit in your face (unlike TDG) and well take the red pil… then below dailygrail.com seems a better order, this would have made the red pill visible. Oh and yes i do design..

” do unto others as you would have them do unto you “

    1. Replies…
      Hi Tox,

Fish oil: I don’t pick the ads, it’s Google adsense which uses context-matched ads (did someone write about fish?).

Logging out: Let me know if this keeps happening. It’s fine for me and I haven’t heard any other comments about this.

Blogtitles: Thanks, knew I forgot something. Now, if I only had of written down how I hacked that last time…here I was thinking I would have some spare time this afternoon. 😉

Mouseover: Don’t think I ever saw this myself in the previous version. If it isn’t there, the most likely reason is it was removed because of security issues. I’ll try and chase it up though.

Merchandise: This is the first design, just a current one I was working on for a related project. There will be others when time allows. The design started out exactly as you describe, but it just didn’t “work”.

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.

      Peace and Respect

Okay, I still have some spare time up my sleeve and you now have 20 blogs in the Recent Blogs block. I’m getting better at this hackery.

For my own personal info next time: Change the db_query_range value in hook_block in the blog module.

Okay, have just added a quote facility which allows you to quote the message you are replying to (click on ‘quote’ rather than ‘reply’). To divide up into smaller segments you need to manually used the quote and /quote tag, inside square brackets (you’ll see how it’s done in the text box). Please don’t abuse it by quoting the entire length of a previous message, make sure you snip it to the shortest possible length.

          Greg

    1. Link problem
      Hi AAiek,

Looks like the spreadshirt.com server is completely down. Not much I can do about it, unfortunately.

  2. I would have preferred the shirts black
Black is the TDG colour. And the writing should be yellow. Why didn’t someone consult me before you did this?
I am good at this sort of thing, specially colour co-ordination.
    But it’s OK.

    1. Black is the new Black
      Hi Shadows,

There will be black shirts in the future, and different designs. I specifically chose spreadshirt.com over Cafepress because they allow black shirt designs, and I knew TDGers would want some black merchandise (you Gothic things).

The current merchandise is based on a graphic I’ve been working on for a related project, so it was first cab off the rank. The designs for the black shirts do have some restrictions, so it’s going to take a bit of time coming up with something decent…and time is currently in short supply (unless I bite into those 3 hours of sleep I get a night).

      Peace and Respect

  3. User-name tracking
    Hi Greg,

Good stuff – I like the style of the baseball shirts particularly. Will have to order me one (or two!)

Have noticed since the upgrade that people’s user names are no longer “clickable”, which also means that you can’t “track” user posts. I found this function really useful for tracking back to specific postings made by individuals if I’d forgotten which blog it was in.

Was this deliberate, or a “feature” of the upgrade?

    1. Fixed?
      Hi X,

Thanks for that. It’s a new feature where you can restrict access to that information to different groups. I’ve set it so that only members can follow that information. Let me know if it’s working right for you now.

  4. Glitch in the Matrix
I’ve already read all the comments here (for instance), but on the homepage, the ‘comments line’ under your post still says there are 12 unread comments.

    Kat

    1. Glitch?
      Kat,

I’m not seeing that problem. Are you hitting the “Back” button on your browser to return to the home page, or are you hitting the “Home” link on the page.

If you hit “Back” it uses your local cached version of the page (hence it still says “12 unread”). However, if you hit “Home”, or refresh the home page using the refresh button, it should reload the page from the server.

      Give it a whirl.

  5. Previously Posted Links Don’t Work!
    Greg

Links that I have posted in the past, that worked in the past, don’t work anymore! Other old new and old links, not all, seem to work. Is this just a glitch or am I being given a hint that I might not fit?

    1. Fixed?
      Hi Kennc

Thanks for the heads-up. Should be working for you now, let me know if it isn’t.

    1. Hmmm
      Hi Kat,

Thanks, that makes two people now. A quick question – when you first arrive at TDG for the day (as in, not having been around for a while), can you simply log-in (don’t click on any other links etc before doing this), then leave it for a minute or so. Then start browsing, and tell me if you still are getting logged out.

(checking to see if activity prior to logging in triggers an anonymous session, which when finalised logs you back out of your account)

      Peace and Respect,
      Greg

  6. Posts authors’ names
Could we please have “Posted by … (etc)” under a comment printed in something more readable that tiny blue letters on the black background please? They are very hard to read. You help would be appreciated.

    Regards, Kathrinn

  7. The ‘Submitted by …’ line
Thanks Greg. I can now read who the poster is without using a magnifying glass and sitting 3 inches from the monitor. You’re a legend!

    Regards, Kathrinn.

  8. Signature with quotation
    Hi Greg,

I’ve just used the “Quote” button for the first time, and noticed that the message screen that popped up did not get populated automatically with my signature message.

FYI – I didn’t hit “Reply” then use the “quote” tags, I hit the “Quote” link below the story, then edited out the quote material that I didn’t want. But the signature wasn’t there.
