In this video, Professor Robert Reich explains in a very clear a succinct way the method by which AI companies are hurting average citizens in ways ALL users of large language models (LLMs) should be aware of:
Leaving aside the obscene instances of copyright violations perpetrated by AI companies that stole countless proprietary work without providing compensation to rightful owners, Reich instead focuses on the impact to communities living near the data centers that are starting to rise all over the world, and how they raise the cost of electricity and make drinkable water scarcer—think about how you might have to endure a brownout during the next heatwave with NO air conditioning, just because your jackass neighbor is trying to make a ‘movie’ featuring Pikachu teaming up with Han Solo and Cheetara traveling to Eternia to save He-Man.
And if that was not egregious enough, now Sam Altman is trying to get a government bailout because the chips are starting to fall, and the AI bubble is finally starting to burst. How many millions of people will lose their homes and jobs this time, compared to 2008?
AI is a technology that is pernicious to human health, the economy, and the environment. What’s worse, it is a technology developed by companies which have no qualms kowtowing to the whims of authoritarian governments as long as they get a free reign to try and bring their posthuman dreams into fruition.
I, for one, am fucking ready for a Butlerian Jihad. How about you?
