UFO Video Investigations

Over at Anomaly Magazine, SMiles Lewis has posted an excellent overview of some footage of a triangular UFO which shoots a beam of light. The footage has been doing the rounds of the usual credulous online UFO sources, but this article quickly brings things back to reality:

I serendipitously came across the website for the Hoax Research Center and when I clicked through the headline UFOs: Phoenix Lights Effect Reproduced I (re)discovered the Annual Speaking of Strange UFO Experience and Fake UFO Contest organized by paranormal author, researcher and radio personality, Joshua P. Warren. And what should I see on that page but a picture of Jeff Wilson’s First-Place Winning UFO from last year’s 3rd Annual Speaking of Strange UFO Experience, which looks strikingly similar to the video in question

Also, over at Strange Attractor our good pal Mark Pilkington has written up his thoughts on a recent video of an alleged UFO over Turkey. The image is clear (although as Mark says, “It’s one of the strange paradoxes of the UFO field that the clearer an image is, the less convincing it appears to be”), and even if fake at least offers some good Fortean thrills:

Whatever it is, the object has incredible presence, with the mechanorganic feel of something from HR Giger’s workshop, or the revived Battlestar Galactica. The lighting effect about half way through is spectacular and tallies with ‘genuine’ UFO reports from as far back as the 1950s. So if it is a scale model, full marks to whoever built it. And if it’s not… brrrr… we are property.

Once again though, it seems rather clear that video footage on its own simply doesn’t cut it in this day and age of cheap and easy CG effects.
