Fringe topics and Fascism: A discussion on how Fortean topics have been used to spread hateful ideologies

It is a well-known fact that the fringe topics that we enjoy here on the Grail have, on occasion, lent themselves to being co-opted by bigots and fascists – from alternative histories in which Indigenous peoples’ achievements have sometimes been minimized or erased, through to conspiracy theories that have laid the blame for all the world’s ills at the feet of Jewish people or other minorities.

However, over the past decade I have been genuinely shocked at how emboldened many of these awful people have been to just take the mask completely off, and what’s worse, how many decent people interested in fringe topics have not only allowed these bigots and fascists to prosper, but have helped spread their hateful ideologies.

So Miguel and I thought it would be great to sit down and have a discussion about this topic with film-maker Paul Kimball, as he is perfectly suited to digging into the topic: not only does Paul have a long history within UFO and paranormal circles as a film-maker and researcher, but he also has degrees in law and history, and wrote his major paper in law school about the Nuremberg Trials, and his thesis in history about the origins of the Second World War in Europe.

You can check out our discussion directly on YouTube, or via the embedded video below. At this time, when fascism and white nationalism are inexplicably on the rise again across societies worldwide, we believe it’s super-important to address what’s happening in ‘our own backyard’ so to speak, as part of a global fight to not let the world descend into darkness once again.

  1. HA!

I watched the podcast, you guys have massive TDS. Yikes!

    – Read a thousand novels, and you will be okay.

And when I say “Read”, you need to read sentence by sentence, not skim.

There are over two hundred years of great novels to read, so start anywhere.

Feel free to read the same novel many times, I can’t tell you how many times that I read LOTR. Authors like Dickens are best read chapter by chapter, over time, cycling through the chapters the way they originally were intended.

This is what Robert Anton Wilson was talking about when he said to embrace a belief system, fully, completely, then do the same to another then another.

When you read a novel, you enter fully into Story, there is no room for your preconceived notions.

When you read non-fiction your preconceived notions can not only remain intact, but in many cases be reinforced, that is clearly what has happened with you guys. You grew your fears over time, rather than seeing if there really was anything there.
