Hang on tight fellow Grailers, as we explore today’s news briefs together…

Quote of the Day:

The real problem of humanity is the following: we have paleolithic emotions; medieval institutions; and god-like technology

  1. The Women
As much as I follow the major ghost hunting shows on the telly I wasn’t aware of the Girlie crew, but then i didn’t really come to the genre until around 2008. Thanks for this link.

Really my two favorite paranormal investigators are women – Amy Allen and Kim Russo. The female mediums tend to be more open, more engaged, and more accurate. At the top the genre really belongs to the women – just my opinion.

Hand close-up: Reminds me of when I burn the Christmas cookies.

Bible dropping: Bibles also make good kindling when you have no other way to heat your house because of religious radicals trying to oppress your country. Funny how a person with logic can poke holes in yours and see the similarities between the Evangelical Church and Daesh.

Cupping: Funny how a person we think of as intelligent and as a roll model can get fooled by “snake-oil.” However I wonder if it’s a way to psych the other countries out. If they see those marks and think you have some form of advantage, they may loose. In before it gets banned for being stupid and dangerous.

    1. Cupping Explained
      http://www.denveracupunctureandchiro.com/cupping/
“As new blood is forced into the tissues around the cups the body will begin to develop new blood vessels called neovascularization, new blood vessel formation. I believe this is why cupping can cause a lasting effect. As the new vessels form they will have the capability to feed the tissues with nutrient and oxygen. Like you and me, all tissues need food and oxygen to survive.”
Something else happens early in this process as well. It is called sterile inflammation. Now many hear the word inflammation and think it is a bad thing. After all we take anti-inflammatory when there is pain and swelling so inflammation must be bad, right? But that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Inflammation is the first line of healing. The body releases white blood cells, platelets, fibroblasts and other healing chemicals to promote healing. When the vacuum occurs it causes separation of the different layers of tissue which can cause micro trauma and tearing. The healing chemicals I mentioned above get released and stimulate healing. The inflammation is not chronic nor is it bad.

Next the fascia and tissue can be stretched several feet with cupping. The micro trauma is occurring, the new blood vessels are being formed and the blood and nutrients are starting to flow to the damaged tissue. But when you put 10 or so cups on the back or around the injured area it can begin to stretch the connective tissue and fascia for better movement. Many tell me that cupping works faster and last longer for them than massage. It’s amazing to see the connective tissue stretch this much. Many people start out very tight but over time they can confirm what I see when doing this to people that the tissue is getting looser.”

Acupuncture has medical benefits, but the way this is portrayed in the Olympics seems pointless and ridiculous in the long run. I don’t think this has any effect on their overall skill other than psyche. Message is one thing, but this is being portrayed as though if you don’t “cup” you will loose your game.

        1. “Cupping has not been studied
“Cupping has not been studied in large, controlled clinical trials. Part of that is because it would be difficult to have a control group.”

Which then begs the question – why is the assumption that it doesn’t work being promulgated by the article? We don’t really know if it does or doesn’t have some therapeutic effect beyond the anecdotal, and people have the right to see for themselves. Waiting around for tedious and expensive scientific verification is unnecessarily stunting for a technique that is so relatively harmless. If we all waited for science to tell us what to do in every instance of our lives we would be waiting in thrall for a very long time. People are adventurous, and the fringe sometimes makes the best discoveries on its own. Vive la adventure.

          1. Yes
            Hi Emlong,

Couldn’t agree more. I have recently studied cupping as part of my Acupuncture degree – it is quite fascinating. I personally think that the vacuum effect on fascia / tissues is extremely important. We know that pressing down on tissue has an effect, so why not, in essence, pulling up? When tension / tightness develops in muscle, there is certainly reduced blood flow in the muscle, and this causes issues removing metabolites etc. In long term chronic conditions, the issues become even more apparent. I know this as I regularly see patients with long term conditions which have not been helped with exercise, stretching or even conventional sports massage.

I would argue pulling up and out the tissues gives the body a rare opportunity to provide fresh fluids, lymphocytes etc to areas which (due to restricted blood flow, etc) have been previously in essence, neglected.

Until the research is done (which eventually, I’m sure it will) it is important we keep an open mind to its potential efficacy, and just because something is a ‘craze’ doesn’t mean it lacks value.
