Do We See Reality As It Really Is?

The nature of reality is one of our abiding fascinations here at the Daily Grail, so I’m sure many readers will enjoy the TED talk above from Donald Hoffman:

Cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman is trying to answer a big question: Do we experience the world as it really is … or as we need it to be? In this ever so slightly mind-blowing talk, he ponders how our minds construct reality for us.

  1. too big
Reality it too big for us. We only see parts of it, those parts that are relevant to us at the moment. That is the stone age and animal version of it.

Then, when we work hard at seeing some other parts, we need special tools.
Like mathematics, telescopes, microscopes, X-rays and whatnot. Some of use prefer more spiritual-oriented tools – meditation, mediumship, drugs and so on. But those are tools nonetheless.

Depending on what kind of tools you use, your perception of reality is more focused on a special purpose. Thus you limit yourself to the improved focus in a specific direction, perhaps losing awareness of other parts of reality.

After all that of course, hard work is tiring, and can have detrimental effects on the body and the brain.

      1. philosophy
Sure, Krishnamurti and other wise people saw these concepts. It is not as if I invented any of it.

The difference between what I try to understand, and them, is that I come from the scientific end of it. Starting out with what is verifiable, and trying to extend from there.

Whereas the pure philosophical approach attempts kind of the opposite direction – start out from general principles and postulates, and advance towards verification if they can. Some of them just stop once they have a good set of principles and postulates 🙂
