Apparently the iPhone is the Ant Kaaba

One for the strange animal behaviour file: the video above shows ants circling the phone in an anti-clockwise direction as soon as it starts ringing.

According to scientists consulted in this news story, the attraction may be a magnetic field thing, the vibration of the phone, or just simply ‘this is what ants do’.

Although it has to be said: ants and us, we ain’t really that different:

  1. The John Keel of the colony
    I <3 it how one ant chose NOT to follow the rest, and in fact climbed in top of the phone looking to check this mysterious object out 😉

    BTW was the phone vibrating when it rang?

      Not all ants can be expected to behave the same. What is striking is how many ants appear to be debilitated.

      The phone was not ringing all the time as one cam hear in the audio. A cell phone turned on emits microwaves whether it is ringing or not.

  2. follow your nose
    Actually, they are following the pheromones of the first ant who made a circular path around the area. Then the next ant followed it, and the next, and so on. By following one after the other they created this vortex of ants. It’s not because of the iPhone being an electrical device. If you took the phone way chances are they would still be making the circle. They instinctively follow the safe path of the other ant before them and can’t stop.

    1. I don;t think that really
      I don’t think that really describes what’s happening entirely. The original ant or ants laying the pheromone track were steered to make a certain circle of a certain size and very evenly spaced vis a vis the cell phone. The question is still what caused the original ant to behave that way in the first place.

  3. Communication Breakdown
    I agree with Greg on this one, as per the second video;

    Ant#1: Hey you guys! look here! God has sent his magical chariot down to show us the way to heaven, and he isn’t squishing any of us!
    Run around it and show that we all believe in him! and you!… Bernie! run around the top of it and see if you can find a way inside! maybe there’s magical goodies there that we can use to destroy our enemies!

    Bernie: Ah gee, do I hafta!(

    Ant#1: Get moving Bernie! or we’ll use you at the next sacrifice!

    “Of course there is a slight chance they are trying to say something profound to us in their own little ant language”
