News Briefs 16-02-2011

Forget that piece of superficial marketing crap that was the Grammys. This is music…a bunch of lads in a shed cutting into some blues.

Thanks to N.H. Redington.

Quote of the Day:

We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still. We have lingered long enough on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We are ready at last to set sail for the stars.

Editor
  1. Carl Sagan
He was a rare poet who imagined his visions into reality. Then he explained things clearly, billions and billions of times on reruns.
    Miss him.

  2. A Truly Dreadful Study – Prayer
Horrible study yes – rediculous. But the Placebo Effect is valid and in many cases nearly equal to prescribed medications without the many damaging side effects. What is wrong with the mind healing the body afterall – we all agree the mind can make the body ill.

    1. projected placebo
Indeed there is good evidence that things like placebo effects are often beneficial, and prayer can likely have a similar effect.

However, this does not extend to prayer or other mind effects on other people.

  3. The Placebo effect of not having a cerebellum?
Linking the past news re. the Placebo effect, and this story about the kid with no cerebellum that has baffled the skeptics, I wonder if his parents should tell him later in life about his condition.

  4. from the A-Train-to-the-Future-Dept.
I don’t think there is a ‘need’ for UFO disinfo anymore…but there will still be a need for people to do something similar to being a militant gay activist in a place where gay is mainstream.

(salt was once extremely valuable that Roman soldiers were paid in it, now look at it…and so forth)

The world is moving on, too fast, too fast!

    1. Watch out for that Maglev!
Much too fast, indeed. A good point was made today on cracked in the article about apocalypses, at the end the author says something along the lines of- why should we stop doing something bad when we have science to work around it- something like that.

    1. It gets weirder
It gets weirder, because according to the article, the ultrasounds taking during the pregnancy did show a forming cerebellum. So I guess this is a job for Scooby and the gang 😉

  5. Zahi and the revolution
I’m sure the absence of tourists in Egypt is decimating Zahi’s budget for the Egyptian Museum, etc., but, ya know, as one of the prime beneficiaries and upholders of the old order, he bears part of the responsibility for the current situation.

Another thing from the article that struck me is this part (with my bold):

“Ahmad showed us his degree certificate and masters in archaeology. He had come many times to the ministry to find work but nepotism and corruption meant it was always someone else who was hired.
“It is a common grievance in a country where poor education, easy qualifications, corruption and a ballooning youth population combine to make a perfect storm of discontent.”

Not to say the corruption and nepotism aren’t also big factors, but how can you know whether or not your university degree is basically worthless when you have nothing to compare it to?

It reminds me of all the naive kids here who think they can earn a living with a high school diploma — or worse, with one of those expensive but worthless degrees from all the for-profit technical and business schools that have been ripping people off for the past couple of decades.
