The Fourth Kind

A new sci-fi/horror movie coming out soon goes right inside the alien abduction phenomenon, with the main plot seemingly based around the testimony given during psychotherapy sessions. Not for the faint-of-heart by the looks of things…

Lashings of ancient astronauts in there, but good to see that there’s obviously been a little bit of research (e.g. experiencers seeing the owl, an oft-reported element) as well. Although if I’m reading it right, the film is set up as a mock reality film based on mock archival footage? Whacky.

The official website for the movie is The Fourth Kind. Below the trailer is a menu of resources regular visitors to TDG will be familiar with, from Coast To Coast AM to the UFO Casebook — alas, the Daily Grail fails to get a mention which is an oversight we’ll be contacting Universal about. Horror movie news website Bloody Disgusting has a synopsis revealing more of the story and background for the Fourth Kind:
1n 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document…until now.

Structured unlike any film before it, The Fourth Kind is a provocative thriller set in modern-day Nome, Alaska, where—mysteriously since the 1960s—a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered.

Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented.

Using never-before-seen archival footage that is integrated into the film, The Fourth Kind exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.
Could the Alaskan town Nome be a pun for gnome, an allusion to the supernatural and faerie links in UFO and alien abduction lore? And I’m hoping Dr Abigail Tyler is modeled after Dr John Mack, particularly his research methods — it’s unclear in the trailer if she’s using the much criticised hypnotherapy, or John Mack’s professional and objective approach to interviewing abductees.

Needless to say, there’s no peace & love with fuzzy environmental warnings in this film. A part of me is annoyed to see the alien abduction phenomenon given the horror film treatment yet again, when there is so much more to the phenomenon, as reported by abductees themselves and advanced by pioneers like Dr John Mack and Jacques Vallee. But it’s great to see the filmmakers have done their research (as Greg points out, witnessing owls, deer and raccoons is a common experience during abductions), and the special edition dvd release will look great next to my copies of Communion, the Mothman Prophecies, and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (I’ve left Signs out because of the door-knob issue).

Quite a few thinking-person’s scifi hitting cinemas in the near future — District 9 and the Fourth Kind, and James Cameron’s Avatar to follow. If only we could get similar progress with government and military disclosure.

1. Mothman Prophecies
One of my favorite films because of the pairing of Richard Gere and Laura Linney. They have real great chemistry. They were together in Primal Fear as well, and the chemistry between them was terrific in that film, too. I really want to see these two actors do another film together. Sorry for the digression . . .

My shelf has Signs. It will never have Communion, even though I’m the ultimate Christopher Walken fan. (More cowbell . . . )

2. the other dr abigail tyler
I saw the fourth kind tonight
very scary

but I recognised the other woman in this story

the other dr tyler was actress Melora Waters from BIG LOVE series and she was on Sienfeld too

great movie but too hard to digest

worth a ticket for the Excorcist scene though 🙂

2. Sounds interesting
At last, a sci-fi film that actually considers the current ET-lore (sure x-files kinda tried)

I get so tired of these films where they just invent ETs that have never actually been reported “in the wild” and ignore the thousands of reported cases.

For abduction and greys info, I hope they read the books of Lisette Larkins

3. Weird
The video footage in the film were of Oct 2, Oct 3 & Oct 4.

My birthday is Oct 3.

And the owl eyes are very creepy.

PS: Also, it’s interesting how they chose the 3:33 am in the clock as the (supposedly) time of the abductions. 3:33 is a time suitable for demonic possessions according to popular culture —see the movie “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”.

And there’s of course the symbolism of the triple triad (3 3 3), the triad being very important in abduction lore, thanks to Whitley Strieber.

Her best performance was as Joanne of Arch. I’m not fan of the Resident Evil films though.

But I did enjoy 5th Element. Supergreen! 🙂
My favorite actress since The Fifth Element. She does a lot of fun films. They’ve sold one ticket already.
“Autowash”

“Leelo Dallas multipass”

😀

She was classic in that role. It exploited her already quirky nature perfectly – leave it to Luc Besson, who also discovered Natalie Portman at a young age.

Some of my friends think she’s a terrible actor and should stick to modeling, but I think in the right character she’s great – cute, funny, crazy. Not everyone has “range” to play anyone under the sun. Some people are more like character actors.

Plus I’ll admit she’s very easy on the eyes.

She has a good singing voice too! And she speaks fluent Ukrainian and Russian. That works for me.

4. Alien abducted me
I see and hear owls around my house all the time. I was abducted in 88 and after that, I seen a giant gray owl standing in the middle of the road up in washington state. I was an owner operator pulling an 80,000 pound load coming down a long grade when I seen something gray and blurred standing in the center of the road ahead of me. As I got closer I could see it was a giant gray owl about 3 feet tall. It walked from the center line directly into my lane and I was going to try swerving to the oncoming lane but a car was coming down the other side of the grade and that would have been a fatal head on discision.

As I got up to the gray owl it just stood there and turned its head towards me and blinked its big eyes. It never moved to get out of the way and I hit it dead on. I looked in my rear view door mirrors and feathers flew everywhere. I felt bad and astonished a bird that big just stood in the road as death came down upon it.

Couple of summers ago I was sitting on my deck in wisconsin when a big owl flew out from the woods across the road and sailed between the power lines towards me on the deck. I was sitting with my dog who also looked up at it. The owl flew over not more than 15 feet and was looking down at me with those big eyes. My dog jumped into the air and chased the owl across the deck as it flew into trees on the side of my house.

Yes, my friends, there is something working in our reality if only we train ourselves to notice. I must tell you, I have trained myself to notice, and its found everywhere.

5. Ok, now I’m really creeped out . . .
The clock set to 3:33 am. I frequently wake up in the middle of the night for no reason. When I look at the clock it’s usually 3:33 am or pretty damn close to it. I’ve been doing this most of my adult life and I’ve never figured out why. This isn’t a lie or a hoax. Trust me, it’s real. I surely wish I could figure it out some day.

No, I have no alien abduction memories or any memories even remotely suggesting that, and I have been through hypnosis for other reasons (stopping a bad habit).

Even without the clock, the movie looks pretty scary. If they never show the aliens, it really will be a creep show.

6. I had a Close Encounter of the Sixth Kind
And it was freeeea-kyyyyyy.

My problem is, I’ve been “probed” one too many times, and now I have a shitty outlook on life.

Those Inglourious Basterds have been visitating me all of my so-called life.

I remember when I was about 7 years old, and I was a’feared of “them owls out back in them trees”, in a somewhat obsessive manner, now that I look back on it. They ought naught do such things to a youthful lad of delicate constitution.

I’ll get ’em back one day, count on it! Oh, yes, they will pay. Dearly.

7. Dreaming owls
I’m not scared of owls, and no, I haven’t even read Harry Potter.

I had a vivid dream about 10 years ago I think, in which I was on a bus driving along a coastal road. Staring out the window at the beach, I saw stranded whales, so I yelled to the driver to stop and I immediately got off the bus. When I ran over to the whales, they were small enough to pick up, so I carried them one at a time and waded out to deeper water where I released them and they swam away. There was broken glass and I was barefoot, but I managed to save all the whales. When I looked back at the now empty beach, I was surprised to find I was a long way from shore, in deep dark water. A jetty extended out to sea near me, impossibly long, so I swam over to it. Climbing onto the jetty, I saw I was now miles from shore, the land a distant line on the horizon. Suddenly a boar charged me. I should have been scared, but for some odd reason I wasn’t and held my ground. The boar changed into a stag with magnificent antlers and stopped in front of me. It motioned with its head to a large deck above, so I climbed the ladder. Everything was incredibly dark now, pitch black, and I could see nothing but the four corners of the deck. Perched on one corner railing was an owl.

That’s all I can remember of this brilliant dream!

1. Deers
Deers are also widely referenced as so-called “screen memories” as the term was coined by Budd Hopkins.

I used to have a penpal during my college years, back when the comercial WWW didn’t exist, and Yahoo & Mozilla hand’t appeared yet. I was enlisted in a UFO discussion forum and became good friend of a man in Wisconsin.

One time this man told me of an event in which he looked outside his window and saw a couple of deers (I think they were several) standing right outside watching at him. I suggested to him that this could’ve been a screen memory (I was less skeptical back in those days) to which he never replied or brought the subject back.

Eventually we broke contact. I hope he’s OK. I remember reading Whitley Strieber’s “The Grays”, and when in the fist chapter I saw that the sory was set in Wisconsin, I thought of my penpal.
