You are getting sleeeepy….

Quote of the Day:

NASA scientist: Maybe we should finally tell them the big secret – that all the chimps we sent into space came back super intelligent.

Chimp in suit on rollerskates: No. I don’t think we’ll be telling them that.

‘The Simpsons’ (“Deep Space Homer”)

1. they may come back
In case they do come back – the research for bigger and better mouse traps is still needed. Especially bigger.

I can help with that, just give me some funding.

If we don’t succeed, we run the risk of failure.

2. Rowling
*

coming from an overtly RC (catholic) country, I was
(have to admit) intrigued by the Vatican put-down
of Rowling.

Utterly sexist.

They cited Lewis and Tolkien.
Both practicing Christians whose friendship schism(ed)
when Lewis married a divorcee.

Lewis’ stuff , ‘Narnia’ was barely concealed Christian stuff
and Tolkien a tiny bit more risque.

Harry Potter is a wonderful hero for kids and well written,
this combines with previous put-downs including the
effect of introducing kids to magic whilst their heads
are incapable of understanding it-I await the criticism of
US media who broadcast war-porn and blatant consumerism
to very small kids…

1. Bah!
I think what they really dislike about Harry is that

a)He likes to break rules, and

b)He doesn’t have much respect for figures of authority, adults included.

God forbid our children from following that example!!

2. Vatican’s just jealous of Harry’s influence
It was announced today that J K Rowling will deliver the keynote address at this year’s Harvard University commencement ceremony on June 5th. University President Drew G. Faust was quoted as saying:

Perhaps no one in our time has done more than J. K. Rowling to inspire young people to experience the excitement and the sheer joy of reading. Her tales of Harry, Ron, and Hermione and their Hogwarts adventures have cast a spell on millions of readers around the world. Harvard isn’t exactly Hogwarts, but I’m sure that her visit with us this June will be a moment of magic for J.K. Rowling’s many admirers across the University.

1. Harry is the Devil
Perhaps no one in our time has done more than J. K. Rowling to inspire young people to experience the excitement and the sheer joy of reading.

Unfortunately, Harry Potter is all they read. I worked in the children’s section of a bookstore and I could not get any kid to read other books, nor their parents. Teacher friends report the same thing — kids aren’t reading more books because of Harry Potter. In fact, children’s books sales figures in Australia show a decrease the past decade (if you take Harry Potter out of the statistics). Yes, kids read Harry Potter, but that’s about it unfortunately. My teacher friends tell me that all the kids will read Harry Potter, but only a few will read other books.

Imagine my frustration when I recommend Jill Murphy’s The Worst Witch, only to be scolded, “that’s a ripoff of Harry Potter!” *rolls eyes*

This is no slight to JK Rowling, she did a terrific job and should be admired. But it bugs me when people claim Harry Potter inspires kids to read more books. Some kids, yes, but they’re the kids who’d be reading with or without Harry Potter anyways.

But if Harry Potter is the only book a kid will read, then that’s still a good thing. Maybe.

3. Copyrighting the pyramids????
The law holds that no exact-scale replica can be made: For instance, if an object is two inches (five centimeters) tall, a product of the same dimensions cannot be made without permission. But a three-inch (six-centimeter) replica would be acceptable, Hawass said.
Damn! Just when I was about to finish my own 1:1 scale replica of the grat pyramid that I built with soda cans in my backyard. Oh well… Maybe I could turn it into an Eiffel tower or something 🙁

1. Scale model of Zahi’s ego
So I’m not allowed to make a replica of Zahi Hawass either?

**speaks to his half-finished Hawass robot**

“Sorry mate, but you’re off to the scrap heap.”

Uh oh, I’ve got a Terminator situation now…
