Weekend Roundup 24-06-2005

Nick Redfern’s new book is certainly dominating the ether-discussions at the moment – a few of them are included in our weekend round-up of interesting essays:

Enjoy!

  1. Sawney Bean inaccuracies
That Fortean Times article is so poorly researched despite the author claiming “I spent a fair chunk of my teenage years researching this Sawney Bean character”.

For a start, the article starts in the wrong place – that photograph of the “sidewalk star” does not mark the site of the prison at all. (I think it’s the site of an old well, though I may be wrong.) The real site of the Tolbooth prison is about 100m up the hill and is marked by the Heart of Midlothian set into the cobbles.

Secondly, his visit to Leith docks: “These days it is a busy entrepôt for Scandinavian ferries”. Not sure where the author did visit, but it certainly can’t have been Leith – or Scotland, for that matter. There are no Scandinavian ferry terminals in this country at all, just as there is no ferry terminal in Leith.

Thirdly, he never questions why the cannibal family were executed in Leith and not Edinburgh. To be imprisoned in Edinburgh and then taken to Leith – a separate burgh with it’s own council and prison – for execution strikes me as historically wrong. Especially so as Edinburgh had a very public execution site just down the hill from the real site of the prison.

I would be telling the author this himself if there were any contact details in his article.

    1. LMAO..!!!
      Oh that’s just priceless!

I do think it’s funny when somebody with a CLEAR understanding of the history/country/geography of an article (such as yourself, Andrew) completely bitch-slaps an obviously incompetent reporter.

      Brilliant!

      yer ol’ pal,
