Funding the Future After Ten Years of TDG

In two months time (September 1), the Daily Grail will be ten years old. For some time, I’ve been seeing this date as a moment to ask myself whether it’s worth continuing on with TDG. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy it, or that I don’t have big plans – simply that the requirements of living a happy family life (I’ve been married and had three children since starting TDG) have meant that I need to start justifying the time and expense I sink into the site.

The upshot of all this is that TDG needs to stop being a hobby, and more the thing that I do professionally. I have a number of ideas on how to achieve this (website improvements, advertising and marketing, diversification projects), but to do so the Daily Grail first needs some working capital, to help fund these future developments.

I have always been averse to people paying a subscription for TDG – I sincerely believe in information being a free resource. As such, with TDG’s tenth birthday approaching, what I am doing is simply asking for a retroactive, completely voluntary subscription, for the ten years of information TDG has provided thus far. This donation/voluntary subscription drive will run for the next two months, till September 1st. To begin with, below is a Donation button for both Paypal and credit card/bank account transactions (edit 11th May 2011: the button has now been removed due to a change in PayPal account). I’ll post details for snail-mail cheques in the coming days, and will occasionally post reminders until TDG’s birthday. The donation amount is completely your choice – what has TDG been worth to you?

Access remains exactly the same here on TDG, whether you donate or not. If you can’t spare anything, there are other ways to help – such as by spreading word about the site to others. When one reader becomes two, our advertising revenue (theoretically) doubles. So that’s how easy it is to give back a little to the Daily Grail.

My appreciation and thanks for all assistance provided!

  1. I’m happy to donate, Greg,
I’m happy to donate, Greg, but am unsure how to make the Paypal thing work. Only have a debit card (I use a credit union, not a bank, and don’t have a credit card) and am not sure if I’m required to set up an account to make a payment, nor how to do so with the Redicard.

      Hi James,

Generally it’s either credit card or PayPal – the bank/debit function is only available in a few countries. It is possible to set up a PayPal account, and set that up so that you can move money from bank to PayPal account, but it’s probably not worth your time just to donate to TDG. Appreciate the thought all the same!

      Kind regards,
      Greg

  2. Happy to contribute
As someone who is also facing the scary prospect of having to make a living online, I am happy to donate a little from my (probably) penultimate salary cheque towards your worthy efforts here at the Daily Grail. I figure that if all of your regulars contribute even a little, it will help and encourage you to carry on.

By the way, while my own very modest site has always had a link to TDG, I would encourage any reader with a website who hasn’t yet done so, to add a link too. This helps with search engines and will be better for Greg if he uses advertising to fund the site. Greg – perhaps you could create a little clickable graphical link for inclusion on our websites?

    Best of luck,

    Dave.

  3. The Daily Grail
    Hi Greg

More than happy to donate. It should be winging its way to you through paypal as we speak. TDG is such a great site which I have been peeking at for over 6 years now so it is a pleasure to give something back.

Have you any plans for the 10 year anniversary of TDG?

    Best Wishes

    Paolo

  4. I’m donating
I’m donating next payday… and I’m a Grail admin! I’m happy to pay for the privilege of writing for TDG. Holy hell’s bells, has it really been ten years? I started reading back in 1998/99, weathered the 9/11 controversy, Zahi shafting us on FOX… time flies. Here’s hoping the DG is around for another ten years — imagine the news, in virtual reality.

    1. Bah!

Oi! I’m quite certain that TDG admins owe nothing in regards to this site. In fact, probably the opposite.

      Kind regards,
      Greg

  5. Supreme site
I really do want this site to continue doing what it does. I will donate even more if your fund raiser fails to help as much as you needed. Please keep us posted and do not hesitate to ask for more if need be.I am proud to donate! Thanks for a great and fun site!

  6. Donations
I will donate as soon as I see how much I have left over after bills. (I am on a fixed income, so I have to spend wisely). I am new to this site and do know there are many Wiccan sites that sell supplies. Perhaps you could get some of these alternative sites to advertise on you site to help defray the cost.
I like the site and hate to see it stop when I just got started!

  7. Revenue from Google Ads
Just had to mention this, Greg!! I think you get some meagre payment for when members access these Ads, and I’ve been trying to do that, but most of them are pretty much where I don’t want to go.

One seen for the first time tonight has me stumped – an offer to download a “holy Grail ringtone” for my mobile!!!!! What in heaven’s name would that be??!

(Sorry – I didn’t click on it to find out.)

    Regards, Kathrinn

    1. Don’t click!

      Hi Kathrinn,

Thanks for the support, but please don’t click on ads you have no interest on. Firstly, I’m not a huge fan of ads anyhow, but they are a way of me covering my server expenses – but I certainly don’t wish people to click them for my sake! Secondly, I can actually be penalised if people click on the ads for that reason – and in the long terms, that sort of approach just devalues the advertising anyhow, as advertisers drop out after making little revenue but paying the expense of ad clicks.

      Kind regards,
      Greg

  8. Mo Money!
I think you should keep the Donate option on the front page, at least on the side bar. But in addition to that, you should have a yearly reminder for the aniversary of the web site (as you’re doing I suppose). Maybe release a book around the same time as well while the iron’s hot. I know I love the books you’ve released so far and I’ll keep buying them. A little merchandising of things we really want is a wonderful thing.

I want a Daily Grail hat! Ok ok maybe too much…. 🙂

    1. I agree with RonB
Please put the Donate button up on the front page in a prominent place, Greg – it’s going to get lost in the blog list. For that matter, I think you should keep the whole blog up front for a while – maybe there are lots of folk who haven’t read it yet.

My money will be heading your way on Thursday evening.

      Best wishes, Kathrinn

      1. Yep
The Donate button up front, along with a picture of a sad pooch

Either that, or I can start a “chain mail”

…A man in San Diego did not donate money to the TDG site, and soon after lost his job, his hair, his left eye, got divorced, and his WoW account got hijacked by chinese hackers.

That should work like a charm 😉
