What's the Far Future of Intelligence in the Universe?
Posted by Greg at 11:42, 05 Mar 2013Robert Lawrence Kuhn, host of the most excellent Closer to Truth series on PBS, poses the question "What's the Far Future of Intelligence in the Universe?" to Singularity guru Ray Kurzweil. I'm skeptical of a few things Kurzweil says, but it's a fascinating question all on its own, and enjoyed hearing his answer.

Let's just assume for a moment that everything being observed and reported about hyper advanced ultraterrestrials zipping about the firmament and below the oceans is true and that they are probably many magnitudes more powerful at computation than we. What exactly has it brought them in terms of "intelligence?" We should be able to look at them and see what out own future will be in this regard. In fact, they may be from our future and we may be observing a race well beyond the singularity already, and "they" may be "us." We should be able to collectively assemble on the reported little details about them and get some idea of the future of "intelligence."

Kurzweil's speculation should not be all that inscrutable for those of us who believe in ultraterrestrials. We are looking at our future in them more than likely. I am not sure that rapidity of calculation defines very closely what "intelligence" is and how it develops. The ultraterrestrials often still believe in a supreme being and stress the use of the heart and soul. There may be aspects of any reality possible in the universe that transcend mere calculation.
