The Great Pyramid of Giza

German Archaeologists Suggest the Great Pyramid was Built Before Khufu?

Two German archaeologists, and the institutions they were working with, have been punished for allegedly stealing samples of Pharaoh Khufu’s cartouche from the Great Pyramid. But perhaps just as controversial is another aspect of the pair’s work, which I’ve bolded in the extract from Al Ahram below:

Egypt’s ministry of antiquities has decided to impose penalties on two German amateur archaeologists who stole samples of King Khufu’s cartouche from a small compartment above his burial chamber in the great pyramid.

During a meeting Sunday, the Permanent Committee of the Ministry of the State of Antiquities (MSA) condemned such action and described it as a great violation of Egypt’s ancient heritage, and the great pyramid in particular – the only surviving monument of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Head of the Ancient Egyptian Antiquities Section at the MSA, Mohamed Abdel Maqsoud, told Ahram Online that the committee has prohibited any archaeological cooperation between the MSA and Dresden University, who supported the work of the German archaeologists, as well as the scientific laboratory where the stolen and smuggled samples were analysed.

The findings of both archaeologists have been rejected, as they were carried out by amateurs not expert archaeologists, Maqsoud asserted.

The results cast doubt on the construction date of the great pyramid and consequently the pharaoh for which it was built. The results suggest that the pyramid was built in an era proceeding [sic] Khufu’s reign.

“This is totally false and nonsensical,” said Ahmed Saeed, professor of ancient Egyptian civilisation at Cairo University. He explains that accurate scientific research dates the cartouche within an era after the reign of Khufu.

While I certainly don’t condone damage or theft from one of the greatest monuments on the planet, the news has a bit of a Gantenbrink vibe to it doesn’t it?

  1. But after all they are “amateurs”
lol. I’d focused on these results when I read the News brief.

“The findings of both archaeologists have been rejected, as they were carried out by amateurs not expert archaeologists, Maqsoud asserted.”

Quite a silly response especially since a University was involved in the research. I’m hopeful that the results will still be made public.

Another silly response is that of Prof. Saeed. I’d respect more of a “all studies we’ve done conclude x We’d like to see the details of their research that leads them to claim y” But, contrary to what many believe, that sort of open approach is rare among professional scientists. They’re people with egos – just like all of us – and they don’t want to chance being shown that what they claim is incorrect.

  2. Details…?
What concerns me about this article is the complete lack of details regarding the individuals involved and their research. Where was it done? Who were they? What methods were used? What actual dating did they come up with? One almost wonders whether the story is entirely fabricated. If anyone has more info, please share.

  3. Doesn’t it seem logical that
Doesn’t it seem logical that carbon dating or some type of dating on the paint used to make the cartouche should have been done years ago and odd that it wasn’t? It follows this is just another example of Egyptologist and “experts” suppressing or avoiding any contrarian evidence that might upend the apple cart they’ve devoted their lives and careers too. After all in the alternative history crowed the idea that the cartouche was added by the Egyptologist of the day to affirm their beliefs is well known, suggesting it is not original to the pyramid construction.

  4. of course, if the pyramids
of course, if the pyramids are quite a bit older, they may not be ‘egyptian’ and that doesn’t bode well for national identity and/or the tourist board.

    1. They got the approval from the university
[quote=VENNOL]and finally got blacklisted / doesnt look like students

Umm . .you do know that the pic shown is a scene from a movie right?

  5. german-archaeologists-will-not-be-penalized-stealing

heres a quote from the above link

” Informed source from Ministry of State for Antiquities Affairs has revealed that the three German archaeologists,
who were accused of stealing artifacts from Pyramids, had earlier obtained three official permissions from the Supreme Council for Antiquities addressed tourism company that organizes trips to King Cheops.

The source added that the ministry has the right to take all legal measures but only against the company
in case of violating standards, which means the german archaeologists will not be penalized.

The first permission was made on 17 April to visit Tomb of the Birds at the Western Cemetery at Pyramids
during the working hours from 10am to 12pm, the source said. The second permission was made on the same day to visit King Cheops after end of working hours from 6pm to 8pm.

The third permission was made for the three archaeologists on 21 June to visit the Tomb of the Birds from 10am – 12pm,
the source said adding that the permissions do not allow photographing or taking any samples,
which inferring that the artifacts were stolen by them and hence the responsibility is laid on the inspector accompanying them.

According to the source, the permissions require paying fees ordered by the ministry board, and standard procedure indicates that visits should not be used for purposes of political or religious publicity.

Mohamed Abdel Maqsoud, head of Egyptian antiquities sector, said the report submitted by the ministry
to public prosecutor include all the evidence accusing the German archaeologists of stealing artifacts
from the Pyramids and other archaeological sites that they accessed from 2006 to 2013.”

    ciao clemente
