‘The Secret’ of the Past

Have to make note that our good friend Mitch Horowitz – editor-in-chief at Tarcher Penguin, and soon to be author of a book on the occult history of America – was interviewed by Associated Press recently on the historical precedents to the recent fad connected with The Secret. Mitch has a great depth of knowledge on metaphysical and esoteric movements of the past, and makes some good points. Mitch has also been kind enough to submit an essay in our upcoming anthology (joining Nick Redfern, Blair Blake, Michael Prescott, Adam Gorightly and a host of others).

  1. Lineage of The Secret
    As a man thinks in his heart, so IS he (proverbs 23:7) —

    James Allen published a book called “as a man thinketh” in 1902.

    Don’t forget “Think & Grow Rich” by Napolean Hill.

    I do appreciate some of the lineage described by Mitch, though he focuses on only the most obvious currents.

    How about the whole Western Inner Tradition or Hermeticism?

    You’d think someone would mention the attempts to meld these ideas with the (100-year-old) ideas of quantum theory –which is an element in both “the secret” and “what the bleep”

    Don’t know why she calls it a “religious” fad either—- its more like “pop psychology” —Religions might tell you that “abundance” is looking for fulfillment through transient “things” rather than finding the connection to the immortal spirit-self.

    Anywho, I grow weary of the backlash against these kinds of things since I honestly believe that we ARE learning to consciously co-create our experience after centuries of mostly doing it unconsciously (and pretending to be victims)

    Any major dude will tell ya.
