    Tobias Jones’ article on “secular fundamentalists” fails to demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of secularism. Secularists do not seek to totally eliminate religion, is that were even possible. What they state is that religion belongs to the private sphere, but has no place in the public domain. This means that the state should not subsidize religious education, the state should not endorse any religious practise, and should not pander to religious political requirements, such as the banning of abortion, gay marriage or stem cell research, but neither should the state give any church a tax-exempt status. Religions have to compete in the marketplace like any other corporation. Individuals are free of course to pursue their religious interests in private, and I don’t know of any secularist or atheist who has a problem with that. Tobias Jones has done everything but declare his own religious faith.
