“For an eternal moment he was still all things at once: the bird, the fish, the rodent, the reptile, and man.”

Quote of the Day:

“Genius is play, and man’s capacity for achieving genius is infinite, and many may achieve genius only through play.”

  1. Baby Planets
” … gap in the dust disk around the star … suggests an icy planet is forming, which the scientists predict to be slightly larger than Neptune.”

Of course, not of these scientists will be around in millions of years to find out if their “prediction” comes true, so what’s the point!

There are obviously other mechanisms that can cause “gaps” in the proto-planetary discs of emerging solar systems, such as shock waves from a new sun’s development. A gap doesn’t necessarily mean a planet has swept out a region within the disc. Articles that I’ve read in recent years discuss how potential gas giants and dwarf suns have been detected from the radiation they emit. If there’s no radiation, then there’s probably no gas giant planet/dwarf sun being formed. The idea of large rocky planets forming from simple gravitational accretion also appears to be “on the rocks” (haha). It may be that rocky planets are more typically created from the collision of gas giants, at least in binary main sequence star systems. Dwarf star systems may develop planets differently.
