News Briefs 12-02-2015

As a foreigner, I’ve long considered The Daily Show to be the most reliable window into American politics. Jon will be sorely missed.

Thanks to Susan, Charles and Jon.

Quote of the Day:

“If you don’t stick to your values when they’re being tested, they’re not values: they’re hobbies.”

~Jon Stewart

      1. This is the era where politics is like gnatty weeds…
… no matter where one goes on the web, it grows wild.

Jon Stewart is no different than Bill O’Reilly in that their entire purpose for existence is to indoctrinate the masses to their preferred viewpoints.

Finding a neutral, domestic source for news anymore is all but impossible.

The Daily Grail… amoung a few others, is like an island get-away from all the partisan political BS… a no-politics, breath deeply and enjoy it kind of thang.

Of course… given things are as they are, I kinda suspected that someone might think I was simply disliking the guy, lol.

        Welcome to the 21st century.

      1. War Against Stupidity
I completely agree. They both started as comedians, but ended up becoming reference points for a niche of the population, who before their arrival had never had any interest in entering the political discussion.

The fact that so many important political figures decided to be guests on shows dealing with fart jokes and pot references speaks volumes about the relevance of both shows 😉

      2. The war against stupidity?
Or a war against people who simply disagreed with certain viewpoints?

In the US right now, the right attacks the left, the left attacks the right and both sides label and libel as a matter of daily routine.

It is such a hollow avenue in a universe so full of wonder left so ignored.

          1. IMESHO…
… what we need to do is to tell both left and right to pay more attention to their work in Washington and less about dividing the nation down lines of utter insanity.

My eldest son is oft to tell me that I should take a side because if I don’t, I’m useless. My reply is that I would prefer to be useless to both.

In all of human history, this nation is the first to base on so much diversity.
In all of US history, we are now more politically divided than since the decade just prior to the Civil War.
In all of our domestic news media, there is not a subject so purposely ignored by both sides.

While the word ‘hate’ has become a political weapon for both sides, I can say that… honestly, I hate the divisions we have so embraced.

That’s my greatest sin right now… well, according to some family and friends.

          2. Stranger in an Insane World
Humor is an effective means of de-programming. But there isn’t much out there for those of us whose eyes have been opened. We are completely incompatible with the entire political system (left, right, middle, whatever).

Hey Greg, if no one takes Jon’s place and his show ends, you can start calling your site The Daily Grail Show! Drums. Actually, we could use a house band here. Tool doesn’t have anything better to do, right?

          3. well…….
The worst thing that could happen is bringing politics in the US towards the center. Except for Fox News, all of the TV stations are so far left it’s beyond parody. They are pretty much boot-licking shills for president mom-jeans and his clown-car posse administration. Pretty much the entire lot is composed of nothing but watermelons: Green on the outside and Red on the inside.

These United States need a serious turn towards Conservatism and away from the Euro-Socialist ideals that have infected our great nation. It’s way past time that we pared the federal government down to only those things permitted to it by the Constitution.

Our citizens need to be taught the harsh lessons of personal responsibility for themselves and their actions. They need to be reminded that charity comes from the heart and not from the government. That welfare is a shameful pernicious thing that destroys a society and does nothing but create millions of slaves, shackled with velvet chains to the welfare plantation that the Democrats created and keep expanding.

We need Conservatism to close down our borders and round up and deport every single illegal alien and ensure that it is impossible for them to ever return. Then start to heavily fine and jail anyone who has employed them in any capacity.

These United States have been corrupted by the left and our foundation of self-reliance and personal responsibility is in danger of collapsing. As it stands now, even with a Conservative pesident and Congress, it will take generations to repair the damage that the current resident in the White House has done.

But we need to get started before we lose the whole thing and end up as another living hell of a worker’s paradise like Cuba or Venezuela.

          4. The Life of O’Reilley
We have to keep in mind the international flavor of this website, and not presume that they care about American politics. I myself don’t care about politics. I do appreciate political satire though!

    1. Sorely Missed
Well, it’s no secret that Greg has had to make huge sacrifices in order to keep the site running. The continuous support of the community has been of great help, but there’s room for improvement 😉

  1. Leader of the Robot Dog Pack
I volunteer the BDI dog to take my place on the Mars mission. I kept waiting for it to pee on a tree. That’s not a problem on Mars though.

    Smile (or not).

  2. euthanasia
This may sound cruel, but I agree. I read one of my mother’s nursing magazines a while back and one article featured a veterinarian who was interviewed on the subject. Her conclusion: “We treat our animals better than our fellow humans.” I am all for assisted suicide and if I was in severe pain or found out I was going to die from a terminal disease, I think I would rather go out on my own terms. Having lived with chronic pain and having come close to commiting suicide when times were bad, I can sympathize with the patient. Imagine being a vegetable and just wanting to die but your family won’t let you even though there is no hope. You can’t rely on your family not to be selfish, so put in your will that you don’t want to be kept alive. It’s not fair to keep them alive. Look at Bobby Christina, Whitney Houston’s daughter. Is it right to keep her alive just because she is a celebrity? She seizes every time they try to get her out of the coma, even by now her brain will be too damaged. She will not have quality of life.

  3. doesn’t smile
She says she loves life but any psychiatrist would tell you she is an unhappy mess. Just like with anorexia, she hated or feared her self image and traumatized herself so that she can’t smile anymore. Lacking common sense or maybe a strong will enough to see that smiling isn’t the primary factor in wrinkles. Health, genetics, smoking, and medications or stress can cause them too. What a miserable existence, and everyone who ever met her must think she’s a bitch. She doesn’t even laugh? Wow what a miserable life. What poison you have brought to your soul and the people around you…

    1. Pity her

It's very sad actually. Especially now that we seem to be invaded by celebrity changelings who think of wrinkles in their face as something worse than cancer.

It's in times like this that I get to appreciate Cameron Diaz as a person more. She doesn't give a damn about the wrinkles around her eyes and mouth, because she knows those are a sign of a life full of laughter.

      1. plastic people
God Uma what has happened to you 🙁
I do pity her but only to a point. She did this to herself, but at the same time I imagine she never had much support from loved ones who could help grow her self esteem. I almost want to know more though. There has to be more to her story because usually those who don’t smile had some kind of really messed up childhood. It’s sad, but still a fucked up existence!

  4. Jon Stewart – Demcorat-Activist-Without-Portfolio
Well of course the Democrats are crying about Jon Stewart hanging it up: they’re losing a daily 30-minute campaign ad which they neither paid for nor had to claim. 2,598 shows, 1299 hours, chock full of Democrat propaganda. What Dem wouldn’t love a television show devoted to following and expanding on the talking points sent out daily from the Democratic National Committee?

    1. If Ur Not Fer It, Ur Agin’ It
The Daily Show was more of an “equal opportunity” political harasser.

The Colbert Report was the outright Republican parody. I’m a registered Republican, but thought Colbert was absolutely hysterical. My political affiliation is more of a vestige of my younger years. It hardly represents me today, but then no other party does either! Even Teddy Roosevelt couldn’t get re-elected through a third party. I generally vote against incumbents and often for independents. That’s about all the effort I want to put into politics right now.

A direct Democratic parody probably could have been just as funny. But, is there any difference between the two parties other than their position on (in) pornography? That’s a joke, don’t get all in a huff, haha.

If you take politics seriously (and think that you live in a democracy), you might be brainwashed. Just saying.

    2. Are we really going to bring politics into it?
I just liked them because they were funny. Have you never seen Bill Maher? You want to talk about faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar left watch Bill Maher. I’m a registered Democrat and sometimes he is even too much for me. And the fact that he’s on the board for PETA makes me just hang my head in shame. If you truly love animals you don’t join PETA, let alone be on the board. But that’s beside the point. Let’s not make Stewart leaving into this:
