  1. black dogs
The interesting thing about the canine family can be seen in North America with wolves, coyotes and feral dogs. Where wolves have been wiped out, coyotes have tripled in population and taken over their niche. When wolves returned, the coyote number dropped substantially. But in areas were ranchers have been eliminating any problem animal from attacking their herds, be it wolf, coyote, bear, or cougar, feral dogs have taken over. These strays turned wild start to rely on their wolf instincts more and over time, generation after generation, their appearance also changes. They become black with gleaming red or yellow eyes. The UK is devoid of all large natural predators (except fox), no wolves or large felines, so these feral dogs can go unchallenged for centuries. I have a feeling this is what’s happening, and the only reason they have gone unnoticed as a functioning population is because of the superstition and because canines are really good at hiding from humans. Wolf populations all over the world are starting to rebound in areas where they were once wiped off the map, going unnoticed until now.
