News Briefs 10-10-2011

First, they ignore you.

Thanks, Greg!

Quote of the Day:

Alan Grayson: Now let me tell you what they’re talking about. They’re complaining about the fact that Wall Street wrecked the economy three years ago and nobody’s held responsible for that. Not a single person has been indicted or convicted for destroying twenty percent of our national net worth accumulated over the course of two centuries. They’re upset about the fact that Wall Street have iron control over the economic policies of this country, and that one party is a wholly owned subsidiary of Wall Street and the other party caters to them as well. That’s the real truth of the matter, as you said before. And…

PJ O’Rourke: Get the man a bongo drum, they’ve found their spokesman!

Alan Grayson: If I…

PJ O’Rourke: Get your shoes off, get a bongo drum, forget where to go to the bathroom, and it’s yours.

Alan Grayson: If I am the spokesman for all the people who think we should not have 24 million people in this country who can’t find a full time job, that we should not have 50 million people who can’t see a doctor when they’re sick, that we shouldn’t have 47 million people of this country who need government help in order to feed themselves, and we shouldn’t have 15 million families who owe more on their mortgage than the value of their home, okay, I’ll be that spokesman.

    1. Steve Jobs High
Speaking of highs, I wonder how many schools in the US have been named after Thomas Alva Edison, and how many years we’ll have to wait to see the founding of the first school honoring Steve Jobs.

  1. Panic of the Plutocrats
We had an extreme police over-reaction in our city, where the police are currently also under federal investigation for their treatment of minorities and the wrongful death of a Native American in an egregious police officer over-reaction.

But aside from that, the 1% who now hold almost all of the wealth and their political boot lickers in both parties SHOULD be frightened. People in the US are finally waking up to the fact that they are now voiceless and powerless, and since 1980 the deck has been slowly being stacked against them.

The media have been slow to cover the movement because the corporate media moguls who control just about every outlet are part of that frightened 1%. (Hey, what ever happened to that Murdoch Empire scandel?)

Despite media attempts to discredit the movement by questioning whether there is any valid agenda, those protesting know exactly why they’re there. The media’s handling of this story has nothing to do with an independent free press and everything to do with maintaining the status quo for the corporation’s CEO, senior executives, their compensation packages, and the corporation’s share price and dividend.

I suspect these protests are harbingers of a movement that’s still taking shape and developing a coherent philosophy. The media’s attempts to either diminish or ignore them will fail because they speak to a far larger and wider segment of society than credited.

The Tea Party movement was a media-fueled joke with a disastrous denouement. These are the real thing.

      1. This is when it suddenly
This is when it suddenly dawns on the Apex that sheer numbers of people can trump concentration of power and ruthless deployment of it. There is nothing like hunger and cold to concentrate the minds of the masses. One old idea is that the protestors won’t amount to anything because they can’t afford the gas to drive to the rallies, but it appears not to be a problem. People who now have to take the bus know all about taking buses now.

    1. now see…
Actually, Greg wrote that – and sent me that news link.

I thought that story was too grusome — said the news editor who posted the story about the guy who cooked and ate his own toes. haha
