News Briefs 18-08-2011

This is a news briefs about a whale —NO!
This is a news briefs about being happy 🙂

Thanks Greg, & John K.

Quote of the Day:

“Science and Religion are like Magic’s squabbling, unruly children who have both decided that their parent should be nutted off to a secure facility somewhere because it’s an embarrassment to both of them. Whereas I think that a magical worldview can do an awful lot to resolve those two contradictory things.”

Alan Moore.

    Good job, rpj :3

I do much the same thing (but I try to find some kind of narrative ‘hook’ to build the links around) on another site — I call my threads there ‘Musings from the Good News Network’.

Anyhew, I still chuckle when I hear some expert when they’re talking aboot memory that our brains ‘lie’ to us :3 Memory is the process of discovering meaning in what we experienced, finding patterns. So of course that means that ‘memories’ are going to change, because that is what memory does and is.

I seriously thing that all scientists (heck, all people) should be required to go through at least 1 psychedelic drug experience, just to loosen the mental nuts.

    1. Meaning
Great to know you enjoyed it 🙂

That notion about meaning I think is absolutely correct. Yet I don’t think it’s the scientists’ fault that we have this idea that our brains function as perfect recording devices. Remember that before there were scientists there were lawyers and judges 😉

        1. Patterson film not a hoax
Tell that to Benjamin Radford! If you go to the Cryptomundo linked I provided, and browse the comment section, you’ll see I had a little ‘mano a mano’ with him 😉

  2. Placebo Effect
As a researcher in the ormus and orgonite fields I get peppered with accusations of “placebo effect” quite a bit. What I see mostly happening is an amplification of a very small signal, ie the effect is based on a signal that just happens to be so weak that we sometimes have trouble measuring it. However, when the instrumentation catches up the original signal is discovered. People who are good at eliciting the placebo effect are often just good amplifiers.

  3. REM
REM just looks like a breakdown in the minds filtering ability. It suddenly admits more data than it can process usually hence the neurological strains. Perhaps this is the body’s way of sort of “blowing out” or resetting the mind’s filtering mechanism.
