Quote of the Day:

Something unknown is doing we don’t know what.

Sir Arthur Eddington

1. Dream on
Dream sharing is an interesting concept, mainly because it would require the same basic kind of connectivity as some forms of ESP/telepathy; assuming that the consciousness of two (or more) individuals can be remotely linked and then share a common experience.

The problem is, therefore, the same as with proving the existence of ESP (sic) itself. Simply claiming to have shared a thought, vision or dream in some ethereal common is not empirical proof that it actually happened.

To my way of thinking, if such is possible – and I believe it is – to one degree or the next, it must also utilize a conduit or form of connection that is detectable, such as with radio/light waves, etc.

One less esoteric possibility is a form of sensory intuition, in which the consciousness (or subconsciousness?) in question makes radical assumptions based on external stimuli and then, somehow, gets it all ridiculously correct. This is purportedly how the weeds in your backyard communicate just before you mow them to smithereens or apply chemical warfare.

(Personally, I think that vegetation has gotten a bum rap. Your standard house plant might be smarter than you are when it comes to anticipating the call of a bill collector or your crumb snatchers tracking mud across the carpet.)

In the end, if there is any form of mental telepathy that exists that allows us to share thoughts or dreams less the spoken (or written) word, then it should be detectable, measurable and finally, malleable.

Half my life
Is in books’ written pages
Lived and learned from fools
and from sages
You know it’s true
All the things come back to you

1. Ka-ching!

In the end, if there is any form of mental telepathy that exists that allows us to share thoughts or dreams less the spoken (or written) word, then it should be detectable, measurable and finally malleable.

Better yet: MARKETABLE! 😀

2. dream on

… if there is any form of mental telepathy that exists that allows us to share thoughts or dreams less the spoken (or written) word, then it should be detectable…

Which is one reason I recently said, in my comment on The Periodic Table of Woo:

Now… If only someone would invent a microscope-type instrument which would allow us to see thought-waves.

My ex-husband and I started dating because we shared a dream one night in which we kissed. As soon as we saw each other the next day, we simultaneously asked each other, ‘Did you have a dream last night? Was I in it? In your dream, did we …err …do something unusual (unusual for us anyway)?’

2. Regarding time travel
Re: MIT physicists find a way around the ‘Grandfather Paradox’.

With the Earth spinning on its axis and around the sun, the solar system spinning around the center of the Milky Way, the Milky Way itself moving, and space possibly expanding so that everything in the universe is moving away from everything else, what I want to know is, where will the De Lorean actually end up when it goes back in time?

1. relative motion
Well, you see, the DeLorean stays in place and thus has to move all that other stuff around to arrive in the same location at the appointed time. In between the rest of the universe is some other place. Hence the blurry scenery during the trip.

This is a tremendous energy requirement of course, and explains the poor gas mileage of DeLoreans, which led their failure in the automobile market.

Or something.

2. Take Time to Think About Space
With the Earth spinning on its axis and around the sun, the solar system spinning around the center of the Milky Way, the Milky Way itself moving, and space possibly expanding so that everything in the universe is moving away from everything else, what I want to know is, where will the De Lorean actually end up when it goes back in time?
P’haps you’ve stumbled across the real reason there are no working time machines around. All the prototypes are floating (with their inventors) in the inky blackness of space…

Classic newbie time traveler mistake. Gets them every time.

3. Indeed
I’ve been wondering about this very thing too. If the time traveller goes back in time to the “same place”, the Earth has moved quite a bit. This same thing applies to ghosts as well.

How is it possible that ghosts are affected by gravity?

If my beloved grandpa would come for a visit to the “same place” he left a few years ago, he would end up in empty space wondering “just where the hell did everyone go?”

1. Place memories and memory places
This conundrum is the key to the difference between space and place. A location in physical space is defined objectively. A place is defined subjectively as a location in (a shared) emotional space, a locus of meanings.

Does this idea link the concept of place memories (ghosts) with the concept of non-local consciousness to which the local brain/mind tunes in? Where do memories reside?

1. place, not space
>> A location in physical space is defined objectively. A place is defined subjectively as a location in (a shared) emotional space, a locus of meanings.

That’s all well and good for explaining ghosts (among other things).

But we’re talking about building a machine for time travel. Since I doubt we could program the De Lorean to time-travel to a subjective place, obviously a time machine is going to require a thought-guidance system — or self-consciousness.

It looks like the team at Area 51 (or wherever they are now) has done a pretty good job of back-engineering the materials, but I wonder how they’re coming along with their understanding of the purported thought-guidance system on the Roswell craft?

At least we know they’re past the staring-at-goats stage, eh?
😉

2. Ghosts and places in time…….
Ghosts remain with the physical Earth because they are ttrapped within it’s electrical field. Think of it as Purgatiry. Only when they are released from that field by God are they allowed to transcend the physical properties of this world and transfer to the plane of heaven.

As to time travel, that whole concept you refer to is a canard. if you travel back in time, you will meet the Earth as it’s moving through space in the past. If you travel back in time, then the earth will be there to meet you. You are transcending a number of planes, and it’s a fallacy that you will go back to an empty place.

1. So…
What we all want is actually a plane-travel machine?

Sounds like we’re going to need to know a lot more about ‘a number of planes’ before we could build one.

What sort of guidance system do you propose?

1. Well yes, let’s not neglect
Well yes, let’s not neglect space-travel in our pursuit of time-travel!

Presumably one would have to set space co-ordinates in addition to the time co-ordinate(s)?

1. Space-Time
I’ve found so far 2 references considering the need to move through space as well as time in literature:

One was a small story by Asimov —name escapes me, sorry.

The other was in the Caballo de Troya sagas.

I think problems arise when you consider some theories that implicate Time as illusory.

Think of every moment in your life as a static perpetual universe frozen forever in that same place; just like the frame of a movie film; your own consciousness is the movie projector that allows you to perceive the flow of time.

But just like in cartoons, the movement of the characters is an illusion.

Obviously this has nothing to do with De-Loreans traveling through space-time wormholes that traverse the multiverses from one time-frame Earth to another —that’s why the De-Lorean was so cold during re-entry 🙂
