News Briefs 13-01-2010

You know you’re broke when you spend your last 20 bucks on a polyester tie for a job interview tomorrow. If I don’t get the job, Neva will have to dance while I play the organ, busking for spare change.

Thanks Kat.

Quote of the Day:

I have dreamed in my life, dreams that have stayed with me ever after, and changed my ideas; they have gone through and through me, like wine through water, and altered the color of my mind.

Emily Brontë

    1. wrong job
Sorry to head that Rick MG.

If you have to wear a tie, it’s the wrong job. Unless the pay is too indecent to mention to the tax people.

I never understood how tying a piece of cloth around your neck makes you socially more acceptably. It seems like a symbolic noose to me. Or a dog collar.

        1. Tied to the machine
I’ve never liked ties, and always avoided jobs that required them. But when backed into a corner, I’ll do anything if it means being able to pay the rent — well, I’d do anything, but I won’t do *that*. 😛

To think the necktie began with cravats and princes — now it designates you’re just another cog in the corporate machine. Making a leftie liberal like me wear a tie is like forcing a vampire to wear a crucifix! It burns, it burns!

  1. Afghanistan
Just the other day, Jan 12 2010, there was an article in Die Welt entitled “Neuer Optimismus unter den Afghanen” reporting that Afghan public perception is more optimistic than it has been for a considerable time. The title in english (for those who can’t guess) is new optimism among Afhans. They report
about a poll done by TV networks WDR/ARD (Germany), ABC (USA) and BBC (UK), which includes findings that 70% of responders though the country was headed in the right direction. The poll was supposedly representative, asking 1554 Afghan people.

The article points to a number of other poll results, where the perception is considerably more positve than a year ago.

Die Welt is a respected German newspaper, pretty much mainstream. They have not been particularly supportive of the US Afghan policies.

      1. Good Luck
        …with the job.

Also, that Emily Bronte article is ridiculous. Reminds me of some of the old behaviourist attitudes – people who dream in colour are schizophrenic etc.

I was hoping someone would comment this! Thankfully Emily Bronte never dreamed too many cigars and towers, or else it would be even worse.

  2. Rick
Hope you get the job – but – I’d never let you and Neva starve! A tin of baked beans and one of Whiskas would be on their way to Melbourne as soon as you ask and send me your address.

    Good luck.

    Regards, Kathrinn

      1. RPJ re ‘Beans?!’
Stunning picture, Red, but I think the gent had a little help there from some extra accellerant! My husband tried that trick once, producing only a small flash (but ending up with a singed backside!!). However since you’re worried for Neva, and I see your point, if Rick is starving I’ll send him a tin of spaghetti instead.

        Regards, Kathrinn

          1. Combustion!
I told him it was a stupid idea, but no, he had to know best! Don’t know about ‘internal’ combustion, but he definitely suffered from ‘external’ combustion!

            Regards, Kathrinn

P.S. He didn’t try it again!
