News Briefs 02-12-2009

Farewell Robert Holdstock (1948 – 2009). More on his life & death. 2009 is the 25th anniversary of Mythago Wood, one of the best books you will ever read (Amazon US & UK).

Quote of the Day:

God is a metaphor for that which trancends all levels of intellectual thought. It’s as simple as that.

Joseph Campbell

    1. He will be missed
His death was so unexpected. When I heard he was in hospital from E. Coli infection (food poisoning), I assumed he’d get better and write more wonderful novels. I absolutely love his Merlin Codex series, and I was just thinking only last week that I really need to get the third book, which I still haven’t read.

Can nobody else die, please? There’ve been too many this year.

      1. In search of Mythago Wood
The news about Rob Holdstocks death is truly saddening the whole Mythago wood series has been a favorite of mine and friends since publication and as young people we spent an inordinate amount of time scouring the Gloucester countryside searching in vain for those fantastic places.
I echo Ricks sentiments exactly, far far too many great people have died this year and all at comparativly young ages, i hope they’ve all discovered their own Mythago Wood.

  1. Robert Holdstock
The power of Robert Holdstock’s writing is rarely experienced and I for one would rate him as one of the very best writers of fiction. The quality of his prose goes far beyond just a ‘genre’ writer as he has too often been perceived to be.
It is bizarre, I never knew the man and yet feel a real sense of loss…
