With my apologies to Hagrid… How often do you find a mainstream media article on the Sphinx, even if you’re in the trade?

Big thanks to Greg.

Quote of the Day:

“Klaatu barada nikto.”

Possibly the most famous command ever uttered in science fiction, in The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). YouTube of the historic moment.

      1. 10,000 BC
When I watched the movie ‘10,000 BC’ on the big screen, I was delighted to see that they had used a lion-headed Sphinx in the film. It appeared a couple of seconds only, and I wondered if other Grailers noticed it, too, when I discussed the movie in my blog—since the movie had just been released, I did not want to spoil it by disclosing the detail of the Sphinx.

  1. A New Famous SciFi Quote
I predict that the new version of The Day The Earth Stood Still will produce a new “famous quote”, one of a more paradigm shifting nature, or at least more the kind of shift we need now as compared to the cold war inspired first version.

When asked why he came to “our planet”, Klaatu responds incredulously, “YOUR planet?”

I can sense generations of my Ojibwa ancestors calling from the spirit world, “THAT’S what we were talking about. Responsibility does not imply ownership.” No word yet on whether they think Keanu Reeves does a better job as Klaatu than Michael Rennie did. But I sense… yes, I can definitely feel that they want me to go see it first chance and report back to them on this. And they want me to have the large popcorn.

No, I am not the brain specialist…..
YES. Yes I AM the brain specialist.

    1. Reagan
According to Lou Cannon, one of Ronald Reagan’s biographers, Reagan was so stirred by the notion that extraterrestrial invasion would trump national differences that he floated the scenario upon meeting Mikhail Gorbachev at Geneva in 1985. This departure from script flummoxed Reagan’s staff — not to mention the Soviet general secretary.

Cannon writes that, well acquainted with what he called the president’s interest in “little green men,” Colin L. Powell, at the time the national security adviser, was convinced that the proposal had been inspired by “The Day the Earth Stood Still.”
Maybe… or maybe it was something else? 😉

Anyways, I also feel I need to go see this movie next weekend.

  2. Sphinx reborn…again?
…geologist Colin Reader found that rain erosion on the Sphinx’s enclosure suggests it was built many years before.
I think Anthony West and Dr. Robert Schoch might want to have a few words with him. 😉

Seems this is a typical media re-hash of old stuff presented now as ground breaking.

As for the face of the Sphinx? Oh yeah, that’s it all right! :/ LOL!

Nothing to see here, move along…

    Cheers

  3. Cold sores ‘an Alzheimer’s risk’ – China look out!
If this is true then most of China is going to be trouble as 75% of the population of China have cold sores. Not to mention hepatitis which is also prevalent with up to 50% of the population infected in some regions.

    Cheers

  4. Sphinx
I still maintain that this beastie was never a lion – it doesn’t have the right kind of tail. More likely a dog in honour of the Dog-Star Sirius. But then, what would I know? I’m not a geologist and I don’t have an Indiana Jones hat. Sigh!

    Regards, Kathrinn

    1. It’s about time someone made
It’s about time someone made a film in which a CGI Sphinx gets up and roams around the Giza Plateau, devouring unsuspecting archaeologists (and getting it’s nose shot off).

  5. Re gender-bending chemicals
Take note, Brisbane dwellers – excreted left-over female hormones from The Pill are still alive and well in the lovely recycled water they’re planning to top up your dams with! Better invest in a rain-water tank for your drinking supplies.

    1. dreams
It is quite obvious that dogs dream. Their legs twitch sometimes, and often they are confused when they wake up.

I have been studying some literature about dreams, for completely separate reasons. Probably I should post a blog entry about some of that.

It is not how fast you go
it is when you get there.

      1. Purr
Has anyone hooked up a dog or cat to an EEG and examined their brain waves when sleeping? My cat definitely dreams, she chirps and grumbles and twitches in her sleep. And she is obsessed with me sleeping — I’ll take a nap and just as I drift off to sleep she’ll be there in a flash, tail swishing back and forth and very alert, purring and watching me intently. I wonder if they can sense our brians moving from alpha to theta sleep. Interestingly:

As the sleeper moves to stage 2 sleep theta wave activity continues, interspersed with two unusual wave phenomena. These phenomena, which occur periodically every minute or so, and are defining characteristics of stage 2 sleep, are termed sleep spindles and K complexes (Figure 2). The former is a sudden increase in wave frequency, and the latter is a sudden increase in wave amplitude. (source)

Could my cat be attracted to alpha and theta? It’s also worth noting that when I’m reading or writing (daydreaming), my cat loves to sit with me and purrs contentedly. I thought there might be a connection between purring and our alpha/theta states, but Cats purr at a frequency between 20 and 50 hertz, which is almost on par with our own Beta frequency, the fully awake and alert state.

I’m being tested for sleep apnea next month, I might ask the docs about this. Wish I was one of them, I’d love to investigate this further.

        1. REM
I wonder if they can sense our brians moving from alpha to theta sleep.
Maybe the cat is interested in the moving eyeballs under your eyelids when you’re dreaming?

Well, someone has to give the boring skeptical hypothesis! and tihz_ho is not always around 😉

          1. I sleep plenty
Well, not plenty, but I don’t lose that much sleep because of TDG, except on Wednesdays.

Now, when it comes to work… well, I’m so glad my boss is not into Forteana 😉

          2. Oi! Steady on…! 🙂
I’m always “around”…lurking in the shadows.

Cats purr because they can. They sense more than just “Brians” such as Georges, Gregs, Ricks and many more!

            🙂

            Cheers
