News Briefs 31-03-2008

Don’t Panic! The news is here.

Thanks Kat.

Quote of the Day:

“The carcasses removd they went not far but to them appeard a spring, at which they tried to make the Beast drink, but in vain, till Diana’s doves in shining bright attire calmed the air with their silver wing.”

Isaac Newton

  1. Sodom and Gomorrah in Springtime
I think that clay tablet that depicts the asteroid that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah was printed by Pravda. Either that or the Times got trigger-happy and ran this story a day too early.

      1. Sodom and Gomorrah seem to be missing…
Note that the Telegraph version does not mention Sodom and Gomorrah. In fact, the Telegraph article mentions the land close to the town of Köfels in the Austrian Alps. No one knows the exact location of the ancient villages of Sodom and Gomorrah.

  2. Jedi church founder attacked by Darth Vader
Serves him right. Obviously that Jonba Hehol has a too-low rate of midiclorians to be considered a true Master Jedi!

  3. Mystery bone found in peruvian bus
I think that’s the jawbone of a mastodon.

      1. What?
You mean to tell me you’ve never tried mastodon soup? 😉

  4. Elephant painting elephant
I emailed that YouTube Perceval posted of an elephant painting an elephant to a friend who’s a professional artist, and who also teaches painting. She emailed me back, saying she thought it was faked, because the video didn’t show the whole elephant painting – it only showed the trunk.

So I looked through YouTube’s list of the related videos. Here’s a video that shows the whole elephant while it’s painting an elephant. The paper’s a different color, the painted elephant looks similar but not exactly the same, and I have no idea whether or not ‘the artist’ is the same elephant.

I suppose it’s possible that the elephant has been taught to paint an elephant, though I wonder how they’d manage to teach it something like that. But even if that’s the case, it’s a darn good trick, and doesn’t negate the fact that the elephant is an amazingly good artist.

    1. They do seem to have natural
They do seem to have natural ability, but there’s obviously some training involved.

Plenty more art and video here at the Asian Elephant Art and Conservation Project: ‘a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the diminishing number of Asian elephants left on our planet through its work with domesticated elephants. The AEACP raises funds through donations and the sale of artwork created by elephants in order to fulfil its mission.’
