News Briefs 31-10-2007

It’s an auspicious night, the cat has brought me a mouse just as I start the news. Darn, it’s a toy mouse, not a real one; but it’s the thought that counts.

Quote of the Day:

Receiving a visit from outer space sounds almost as comfortable as having a God. Yet we shouldn’t rejoice too soon. Perhaps we will get the visitors we deserve.

Jacques Vallee

  1. Nice!
Now that’s a Halloween news wrap – nice job Rick. Now back to your crypt!

    Kind regards,
You monkeys only think you’re running things

    1. Crypt with cable internet
I have internet connection in my crypt. 😉

I’m always envious of those in the Northern Hemisphere at this time of year. We don’t get autumn (fall) like folks do in the USA, Europe, Japan. It’s one thing we miss in Australia, the fiery-leafed change from summer to winter, and I often wonder how that affects our mythology and culture. There’s the football season, and the cricket season — I bet Greg’s firing up the bbbq right now. 😉

      1. Autumn
Oh dear, dear, dear. There you are, Rick, sun blazing above, and banished back to your Crypt by Greg; and here’s me looking out the window, the leaves browning nicely …
Sorry, I’m being ‘orrible. But it is my favourite time of year – yet … somehow the beauty of it is getting shorter, whilst autumn weather is beginning to last longer, as winter refuses to come.
        But that’s a different thread 🙂

Reality, like time, is relative to the observer

  2. Queremos Halloween!
Well, I have to admit that as I got older, I began to fret all the kiddies who came screaming to the door demanding their Halloween treats. That’s the privilege of middle and upper-class kids, they get to celebrate BOTH the american festivity, and the mexican tradition. The same goes for Xmas, when the little rascals receive presents from Santa Claus AND the 3 Wise Men (Los Reyes Magos) on January 6th.

But, when I was a kid myself, I admitted enjoyed putting my Dracula cape EVERY year. It was the only custome I liked, complete with my plastic fangs and all. Vampires have always fascinated me you know, although nowadays it would be easier to dress up like Frankenstein (no need for shoe platforms… or prostetics for that matter!).

And every year it’s the same old thing: the mexican Catholic church condemning the celebration of Halloween because it’s a SATANIC holiday, complete with black masses and all sort of soul-condeming activities (“You eat that popsickle and you’ll go straight to Hell sonny!!”). Pure nonsense.

It’s not the depth of the rabbit hole that bugs me…
It’s all the rabbit SH*T you stumble over on your way down!!!
