News Briefs 13-08-2007

Although it was released way back in 2000, I watched the movie Thirteen Days (DVD, Amazon US & UK) for the first time this weekend. Based on the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, I found it absolutely riveting. But for greater depth and accuracy on the subject, I’m planning to read The Kennedy Tapes (Amazon US & UK) and One Hell of a Gamble (Amazon US & UK). As the movie’s tagline says, you’ll never believe how close we came.

Quote of the Day:

In Fort Worth on the morning of the day he died, John F. Kennedy and his wife discussed the risks that a President inevitably faces when he makes public appearances. What Kennedy said was mentally recorded by his special assistant, Kenneth O’Donnell, who repeated it to the Warren Commission: “If anybody really wanted to shoot the President of the U.S., it was not a very difficult job—all one had to do was get a high building some day with a telescopic rifle, and there was nothing anybody could do to defend against such an attempt.” A few minutes later, Kennedy departed for Dallas.

First paragraph of Time‘s ‘The Warren Commission Report‘, published Oct. 2, 1964.

  1. UFO Footage…
Either an excellent fake or Damn good footage .. there is a second snip … refered to as “Part 2”
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=mos9-LReoWQ
Although, as I viewed both, I would suspect that perhaps a proper sequence would be to watch the second one first, then the one posted in News Briefs above second. If they are “real” this sequencing would make more sense.

It has been interesting that armchari “video analysists have already “debunked” these videos .. consistent among these “professional” reasons .. One was shot in Haiti and the other in the Dominican Republic … The second, usually espousing to computer graphics programs that can duplicate these videos. Most all, say that it was throughly “debunked at Jeff Rense dot com ….
There is a lengthy article there – and it presents more, much more than “debunking” … here is the link.
    http://www.rense.com/general77/haiti.htm

The discussion is far from over on this. If it is possible, what is needed is REAL photo analysis.

I would comment that the issue of them being shot in Haiti and the Dominican Republic means absolutely .. as both videos have been posted countless times by folks you are undoubtably NOT the one(s) who shot the video. I think it would be fair to speculate that the video(s) were shot in the same location. I would suggest that the “part two” is more probably the first of the two brief segments … one reason to suggest this is that in the second one … the last craft .. Similar to the to in the ones posted in the News Brief Section above passes a structure … possibly a tower/water tower .. That may well be the same as seen to the left in the one above … which might indicate that the photographer changed location. Also … it may well indicate a passage of a small amount of time, as the light conditions are slightly different in the second (the one posted above) than in the first (the one I gave the link to above) … indicating perhaps a small passage in time …
But then this is just speculation on my part.

    I would though like to quote an observation made by one individual in the Rense piece, from Glenn McCarthy, owner of a post production video studio;

“When the UFO is directly overhead and the camera is shooting through palm fronds, both the UFO and the fronds go out of focus together. It would take a industry professional with very expensive equipment and dozens of hours of unpaid CG, much less location work, to create these images and even then I’m not sure it could be done at this quality. I have yet to experience new software and equipment that could fool my eyes to this degree.”

    If a hoax .. What an amazing amount of effort and possible expense for what, 42 seconds worth of video … and for what gain??? as one contributor to the piece maintains;

“I just can’t imagine someone going to this much trouble for a single frame of video. Any glow effects would be much simpler (and still completely convincing) if they applied to the entire scene. Producing a partial shadow effect would be a lot of trouble. All for a single frame of video?”

    Another comment there worth noting;

“While living in New Mexico for the last 10 years I have crewed for a balloon at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta for 7 years. I also crew for a balloon throughout the year to maintain proficient operational crewing skills. (I crew for the balloon I am not a pilot of a balloon) One complaint of many locals when we fly over populated areas is the noise of our flames when we heat the balloon for lift during normal flight. This noise along with our presence in the sky creates one other disturbance… DOGS. Dogs blocks away from us and in all directions run in their yards and out of their doggy doors if they have them and BARK AT US! That experience is what I heard in this film… VERY INTERESTING.”

The one wonderful thing about the internet is that it opens incredible new sources of information .. It also becomes the platform for armchair “experts” … SO is it real … is it a hoax … That is still, in my opinion a VERY open question.

  2. Being an Ugly Betty
    isn’t easy ya know.

Seriously… it is appalling that we are so shallow as a society as to judge people on their appearance to that extent.

Now it all makes sense why people spend so much on their appearance.

Dang that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

    dang them!

    sigh

    hug

    marissa

    1. Uggly bettys: grays
Doesn0t most people apply the same laws in the UFO research? The ugly-looking and fearsome grays are seen as bad and demonic, while the Blonde and fair nordics with their flawless physique are seen as angelical beings.

What if it’s the other way around???

    2. Beauty
      Hi Marissa,
It isn’t quite as bad as that. Good looks do attract, there’s no denying that. But it’s like the qualifications you have to present at an interview. For a lasting relationship, the beauty has to come out from beneath the facade.
Getting the interview, and getting the position are two completely different things.

      1. Dear Mr North
        Pardon me my saying.. but

In California.. the vainest state in the Union in my opinion…

        looks can be almost everything

I saw it at work.. you see it at school..

        alas and alack

I always loved watching British films… do you know why. Outside of the fact that the acting is usually better than the films we make…the actors aren’t always picture perfect. The women don’t all have the same nose and boob job. The men don’t have plastic surgery etc. There was some unbelievable number of teenagers in Southern California that have had nose jobs before they are 18.

The only regret I have…is I didn’t get to have one! lol

Getting the interview…ah.. if you are lucky lol.

God help you if you are female, middle aged, over weight and plain looking and live in California.

        ok.. I am whining lol

        hugs

        marissa

        1. Plastic people
          Hi Marissa,
I remember a UK TV adaptation of The Darling Buds of May. One of the stars was a young Catherine Zeta Jones, fresh, natural and yes, beautiful. Then she descended into the Hollywood machine and this plastic looking thing appeared.

      2. interviews and such
with all due respect anthonynorth (and I do respect you), a really major quality you have to project in job interviews in Europe and Canada is conformiity. You have to be a yes man. It is even worse if you are a woman.

The clear and present fact is that they want you to be submissive. Tell me, anthonynorth, where that is not correct? We agree on many things, have many good discussions.

They don’t want anyone who will upset the corporate system. It is inherited from the old feudal system.

In some parts of the US, where the economy is more dynamic, companies actually hire creative, inventive people.

        1. interviews……?
I have never had an interview as such, everyone I have worked for has asked me if I would work for them. As far as looks go, I haven’t scared anyony yet that I know of.

Follow your passion people, you will always succeed.

“Life can be whatever you want it to be, as long as you do what your told.”
          LRF.

        2. Interviews
Sorry, Earthling, I maybe expressed myself wrong above. I was using ‘interview’ as a kind of metaphor for boy meets girl, but boy disgustingly only sees surface beauty. Girl gets through ‘interview’, but boy often realises that beauty is a lot more than looks. Girl dumped.
It works the other way round, too.
As for interviews proper, yes I agree with you. If you don’t conform, don’t bother with interviews. You’re wasting your time.

Life must be a balance, or it’s a bitch.

          Anthony North

  3. I dunno…
Those videos look awesome, but the trouble is -and we as UFO enthusiasts do have to be mindful about this- is that the softwares to make sequences that would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to a Hollywood studio 5, 10 years ago, are becoming cheaper and more available to CG artists, both professionals AND amateurs.

Why would anyone spend so much time and trouble to make this sequence? for the thrill any hobbist gets of seeing the fruit of your work becoming a nice a convincing shot worthy of ILM or WETA workshop. There are countless websites where artists exchange tutorials, tips and advise on how to master these very difficult programs.

Also, Moore’s law has permitted that a 2007 top of the line Home PC is by comparison far superior to what ILM artists had available to make those cool Jurasic Park shots back in 1995.

Are these videos hoaxes? I honestly don’t know.

But one thing is clear though: in the XXIst century a photo or video are no longer proof enough of anything. The video can only be a support evidence for any ongoing investigation, along with witnesses’ interviews, soil samples, etc.

    1. Photo evidence
      Hi Red,
Forget the 21st century. It was always thus. In the 19th it was spirit photography. Seems so obviously fake today, but not then.
Whoever said ‘the camera doesn’t lie’ was one of the greatest con artists in history.

      1. similarly
Similarly, you can do this stuff with sound. If you have enough sound samples of someone (think of any public figure), you can make them give a little speech. Saying pretty much anything you want them to say.

Sure the hoax will probably break down under expert scrutiny. But the rumor often spreads faster than the denial. Which is the point of the hoax.

          1. unlikely
That would assume that the american secret agencies are doing this and then giving it to some schmuck among the confidential sources of Al Djazeera or Al Arabia networks. Considering how inept the american secret agencies have been in all this, that is an unlikely chain.

If they were that good, they could have achieved their goals much easier. In particular, they could have achieved their goals, which at this point they have not.

Of course you could say the only competent people are those faking the speeches.

Whichever is the case, it really does get foggy when you cannot trust the evidence.

            —-
You can observe a lot, just by watching. (Yogi Berra)

          2. and yet….
Even former president Bill Clinton mentioned once that it was funny how a tape of Osama would only come up days or weeks before an election took place, and thus aiding the GOP mantaining its base power.

You guys remember that movie with Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman: “Wag the Dog”?

And of course we must remember our Orwell: War is Peace.

Yeah, I know. Too conspiranoic. But it something that still bothers me.

Whatever it is, the saddest outcome of all this ordeal is that american people live in such a state of perpetual fear that eventually the fear is lost in the noise of the background, and suddenly all the lost of basic freedoms is taken for granted.

          3. Fear
Red, I don’t dispute that western politicians use fear as the new ideology to keep a population sweet. It is dangerous, it is malicious, it is anti-democratic. And yes, it is always handy that there is an Osama bin Laden. But it’s PR, not conspiracy.
Maybe we fall into their hands by making too much of it.

          4. Goldstein
I agree. Every totalitarian state needs an outside threat, a Goldstein, and then to turn it into an INSIDE threat, someone who walks among us in disguise.

I have always felt that the greatest aide someone like Fidel Castro had to mantain power for so long in Cuba was, ironically, the same government that tried to get rid of him and impose so many sanctions on the cuban people.

          5. sanctions
yes it always helps to have an external enemy. That’s not an invention of recent memory, probably it is much older than civilization. Helps to keep the group together.

As for Castro – yes the sanctions are a good excuse. But Cuba is trading with the entire rest of the world, except the US. I buy Cuban stuff every now and then. I just think that Cuba’s current economic policies are stupid, which is why they are poorer than they need to be. And having to keep up the pretense that the US is at fault, that is part of the problem. It limits Cuba’s options.

They are as poor as the state needs them to be. Remember: FREEDOM IS SLAVERY.

And of course, most of the country can have ANY access to the world wide web. Internet is restricted to e-mail; but even that is being used as increasingly powerful tool to spread news and political opinions.

          7. incidentally, today is an anniversary
August 13 (my part of the world) is an anniversary.

It was on this day in 1961 when the German Democratic Republic started building a seriously fortified border defense against the Federal Republic of Germany. Most people think of this as the “Berlin Wall”, but it was not only in the city of Berlin. It was along the entire border between the Soviet-occupied part of Germany and the rest of Germany.

Individuals got killed trying to cross this border. Amazingly, for a defensive installation, almost all the folks getting killed were trying to go from the GDR to the FRG.

Probably about 1000 or so, from 1961 to 1989 when that border was opened. Nobody knows exact numbers.

But you see, from the GDR (communist) point of view, they were all criminals. Their crime was not wanting to live in the GDR.

          8. How sad
“Mr. Gorvachev, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!!”

I still remember watching Reagan saying that speech. It was powerful.

How easy they forget, now that they are trying to build a new wall, this time to foolishly attempt to block the flow of immigrants that want to work and get a better life for their families in the US.

And there have already been deaths too.

          9. not quite separate
I am a big supporter of personal freedom. In particular, the freedom that people can live where they want, and make a decent living.

We have no right to force anyone to be poor. And as long as there are these big differences simple personal wealth, people will always move. You can’t stop them.

Most people who move long distances, to a totally different culture, don’t really hope to be billionaires. They just don’t want to be really poor any more.

There is a very big difference though with the GDR (DDR).
That country was forcing people, at gunpoint, to stay in that country. Essentially, the entire country was a prison. If you left without permission, you could be executed.

That is not really the same for the problems now between some of Latin America on one side, and the US and Canada on the other.

A similar thing is going on between Africa and the EU.
