News Briefs 08-03-2005

They dig up something new – or old, as the case may be – in Britain practically every week. Why don’t we just save ourselves the suspense, and turn the whole country into an ongoing archaeological excavation? You may notice I dug up a couple of these news items too.

Quote of the Day:

One of the unique attributes of high-energy plasma discharge is that its formations appear alive. In such discharge formations, one phase evolves violently into another, many with structure that is eerily familiar to the student of the antique cultures. By direct comparison of discharge formations to anciently-drawn pictures of the sky, the question is answered: Who were the mythic gods.

  1. Woo-Hoo Kat!
And welcome to the team! A great news brief. I especially enjoyed the first story as those tunnels are on my old stomping grounds. I would love to know where they all lead, and wonder if one ends up in the basement of the old Templar building just outside the Linlithgow Palace grounds – the building is now a bank!

    Regards, C

    1. Thanks.

      There was another
      Thanks.

There was another article recently about tunnels near some castle in Scotland. They’re about to reopen those, as they’ve been blocked by trash for a century or three, and no one knows what’s down there.

Question is, did I see that article at TDG or scotsman.com?

      Cheers,
      Kat

  2. bonza bewdy mate!
    Onya Kat!
Now we will see some interesting stuff!
I always say you are the smartest person posting here, and you are proving it.
Haven’t read them all yet but I will when I get a moment later.
    Woohoo!!!!

Oh c’mon AA, I gotta let ‘er rip some time.
I only use words like that when I really really really want to let someone know that I am really pleased.
Like when I heard you were giving up rum because your liver was preserved!

      2. OK AA I will concede
OK AA I will concede that using Aussie slang like that is just as jingoistic as yelling Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi.
But you must admit I could have said bonza bewdy bottla and I didn’t.
I could also have said Fair bloody dinkum mate she’s a bit of orright!
        But I didn’t.
I could also have said Stone the flamin’ crows mate, this sheila’s a good sort.
        But I didn’t.
I could also have said If she posts like Warnie bowls we’re on a hiding to nothing.(Have I got that right)
        But I didn’t.
In fact I was very restrained and merely mentioned in passing that I thought it was terrific that Kat is now posting news with the blokes.
However…admonition noted…..and no more bewdy bonzas will pass my keyboard, unless of course I have had a few rums.

My Gawd, who let that woman in here?! ;o)

Great job, Kat. Your first solo is a success. Now that you’ve had a taste of the enormous rewards that the knights enjoy I’m certain that you’ll want more. Case in point – thanks for agreeing to cover me on Friday.

-I found the article on rotating microplates off the Galapagos interesting. I take it that geologists have never encountered this before now. Is this the way all tectonic junctions behave, or is this an anomaly? It does appear that the microplates are rotating in opposite directions, but I don’t understand why they conclude that the rotation would cease once the rifts cut into one another, especially considering that they admit that they don’t understand what is driving the rotation.

-No one that has ever spent much time with animals believes that they are stupid. I suppose that more and more of us have little to no contact with animals. The only contact some people have with animals is meat wrapped in cellophane at the store or ordering from a menu. But stupid or not, I still like a juicy steak. There is an unequaled satisfaction in hunting an animal, killing it, butchering it, and eating it. I think it makes one more appreciative. I learned early in life to never name an animal on the ranch that was intended for food.

-The gnome star is an interesting piece. Jupiter emits more energy than it consumes, but it is not a star. It appears that to be considered a star, the body must shine, however dim. The road to stardom must be density.

-The salty soil on Mars has ‘ocean’ written all over it. Is it still beneath the surface, or did it evaporate due to lack of atmospheric pressure?

-The story on female orgasm leads one to the very basis of sex – why did complex organisms abandon the path of cell splitting for a much more chancy reproductive method that requires two sexes? Where does one find 3000 female twins that are willing to discuss the intensity their orgasms during masturbating, penetrative sex and oral sex?

-I would like to know how many Indian space scientists and technologists that don’t like to talk are studying UFO flight patterns. Two or two thousand? I would guess that it is closer to two if it’s not classified.

A good update generates more questions than answers. Good update Kat.

    1. more questions than answers
      Hi Bill,

      >>No one that has ever spent much time with animals believes that they are stupid.

I’ve seen plenty of research articles which have led me to conclude that many times the animals are smarter than the scientists who are studying them. One article which I chose NOT to post was a clear example. The scientists were all agog because they had proved that monkeys were aware of other animals’ and humans’ facial expressions, moods, awareness, etc. What proved this to them? The monkeys stole a human’s grapes by noticing when the human’s attention was elsewhere, i.e. when the human couldn’t see the grapes. Is there anyone who’s ever owned a pet, been to a zoo, watched squirrels in their backyards, etc. who hasn’t seen animals doing that?

That said, I suppose these scientists are smarter than I am — since I have yet to figure out why they get paid for this “duhh!” level of scientific research. All I can figure is, it must be those honed grant-writing skills.

      >>Indian space scientists studying UFOs…

I think these IndiaDaily stories are about on a par with Pravda. But this article did point to feasible method of learning more about UFOs — if we ever get some really decent video of them. (Anyone who doesn’t understand why those videos are so difficult to come up with must have missed Greg’s post of that ‘film the ufo’ computer game.)

      >>Where does one find 3000 female twins that are willing to discuss the intensity their orgasms…

      Australia, mate. 😉

      Thanks for the kudos,
      Kat
