“Won’t you step into the freezer…”

Many thanks to Greg, RPJ and Perceval!

  1. 100 twitters
Hrmm, hard to choose between Phil Plait, Adam Savage, and Penn Jilette, three of the biggest boors in skeptic-land. I’ll think I’ll just follow the twitter of that goofy anti-science guy. William Gibson, Wil Wheaton, and Neil Gaiman aren’t bad either. 😉

Or I might just turn my computer off and go read a book under a tree for some peace and quiet. Twitter is a magnet for attention whores, and there are too many voices in my head as it is…

  2. ice and water
The people who live on the coasts should be prepared. It is just common sense – the oceans rise and fall.

Suppose there was a dangerous lowering of sea levels. Many port cities, many fishery industries would be out of business.

The coastal economies have dealt with this for centuries. Al Gore should stop crying, while he makes millions. The coastal industries should be at work, investing in their future.

Besides, a lot of NYC is already below sea level. Most of the Netherlands is below sea level. So what is the big deal ?

it is when you get there.

    1. The big deal
The big deal is that you need lots of money and years in planning to face the changes in sea levels. New York and Miami will be fine, but what about the ports of third world countries?

      1. true
true, places like Bangla Desh could have major problems.

But consider the case of the Netherlands. They had a very similar problem for hundreds of years, and they dealt with it. Using methods that look outdated today in 3rd world countries. The Netherlands are basically a swamp at the mouth of some big rivers.

You need planning, that is correct. But you don’t need tons of money, nor do you need advanced technology.

What you need it earth moving equipment and pumps. And manpower, but that should not be a problem.

Or let’s take another example, the hurricane that hit New Orleans. All the damage could have been prevented.

The problem was not that they didn’t know what to do, the problem was that they didn’t do it.

        1. But the very first problem
But the very first problem is convincing people that they have a problem.

          1. very true
            True, prayer alone won’t help.

In the low places, it seems painfully obvious that they already have a problem, rising sea levels or not.
