News Briefs 27-08-2008

Feast or nibble, the news is a banquet for all.

Big thanks to Greg and Kat.

Quote of the Day:

The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it.

Marcus Aurelius (121 AD – 180 AD), from Meditations (Amazon US & UK)

  1. Dr Shermer.
I just hope one day, Dr. Shermer looks into the sky and sees something that is not a star, a balloon, Venus low on the horizon etc. that maybe 95% of all sightings are, and has to pause, and wondered exactly what he has seen. Then he might just give some credence to those remaining 5 percent, and maybe we can move forward on UFOs.

I did however love the final paragraph of the newspaper report….

“Dr Shermer also used his presentation to debunk other conspiracy theories, including that George Bush had orchestrated the September 11 terrorist attacks.

“The Bush Administration didn’t orchestrate 9-11, because it worked,” he said.

    So true!

    1. UFO fleet over Moscow
I would say the figure is 99.9999999%

Strange isn’t it that there are millions and millions of cameras in the hands of millions and millions of people everyday and all we get are blurry blobs.

There were better “UFO” pics before the digital revolution. LOL!

Take this fleet of UFOs videoed over Moscow from afar… where are the videos and photos from UNDER the UFOs or at least nearer to them?? Hmmmm, I guess if you were nearer to the “UFO fleet” it becomes a “Oh, that’s what they are…”, nothing special to video or photograph.

If people WANT to believe something they fit whatever facts there are to fit their beliefs. That’s a fact.

If UFOs are really space travelling aliens aren’t they rather careless to be photographed at all? Therefore it seems they don’t mind being photographed so why not say squirrel around in plain view around the Eiffel tower?

      Cheers

Applications of ultrasound streaming and radiation force in biosensors

The application of ultrasonic piezoceramic devices as biosensors is well established (Bunder et al., 1998, Benes et al., 1995, Ivnitski et al., 1999 D. Ivnitski, I. Abdel-Hamid, P. Atanasov and E. Wilkins, Biosens. Bioelectron. 14 (1999), pp. 599–624. Article | PDF (328 K) | View Record in Scopus | Cited By in Scopus (204)Ivnitski et al., 1999, Janshoff et al., 2000, Cote et al., 2003 and Leonard et al., 2003). The properties of such systems will be summarised below to provide an acoustic transducer context for the focus of the present review which is on applications of ultrasound to enhance the performance of functionalised biosensors in general (piezoelectric, optical or electrochemical) by delivering either cells or biomolecules to a surface. Ultrasound will also be examined as an agent that can enhance interaction of functionalised particles in suspension. The ultrasound is not employed in these cases as a ‘biosensor’ per se but as an enhancer of biosensor performance.

A biosensor is a biologically or biophysically-derived element that detects a quantity to be measured combined with a physical transducer that provides an output signal that is a function of the measured variable. Ultrasonic/piezoelectric quartz sensors have grown from RF technology development and the utilization of piezoelectric elements in areas such as radar, cellular phones, computers and electronic watches (Cote et al., 2003). These acoustic biosensors usually operate in oscillator mode. The output signal is a resonance frequency shift that can be relatively easily measured and subsequently digitally processed (Cote et al., 2003).

  3. Birds of a feather…
To test the birds’ recognition of faces separately from that of clothing, gait and other individual human characteristics, Dr. Marzluff and two students wore rubber masks. He designated a caveman mask as “dangerous” and, in a deliberate gesture of civic generosity, a Dick Cheney mask as “neutral” [emphasis mine]. Researchers in the dangerous mask then trapped and banded seven crows on the university’s campus in Seattle.
Science grants are harder to get nowadays, aren’t they?? 😉

  4. Fortune favours the brave
They assumed that tribes with a high proportion of belligerent men would be more likely to attack rival groups, while those with a high proportion of brave men were more likely to win such battles. Both traits, however, also increased the chances of death.
Interesting, but the problem I have with this study is that they make a direct link between belligerance and bravery; I believe most belligerance and violence stems not from bravery, but from fear. Aren’t pillage and rape considered the acts of cowards?

    1. Bravery and fear
When faced with fear, a person will create an ideal form to overcome it that he will call bravery. Bravery is an attitude that boosts consciousness to act above the fear.

It indeeds have nothing to do with the absence of fear.

A man without fear is therefore not brave, he does not need to be brave either.

Bravery is then simply a polarized projection from fear and not its absence. Absence of fear lies outside the polarity.

Polarity is perhaps the biggest problem the human species has.

All it is is a reaction that forces a move on the path of experience because man needs to move away from causes of pain. But instead of coming out of the mindset, he creates forms within the mindset to compensate and contain the experience together with its consequences by changing the polarity of an emotion. But it is just a polarity of the same energy.

      1. bravery and fear and panic
In a dangerous situation, some people panic, and some people do what has to be done. Sometimes there is no time to think, other times you have to make hard decisions with lots of time to think about it.

You can do what is necessary while you are very afraid. The concept of heroism comes from outside, from other people, after the events are over.

        Don’t panic.

        —-
It is not how fast you go
it is when you get there.

        1. Exactly
Bravery is a psychological means to overcome fear.

Absence of fear is therefore not bravery.

Panic is the overcoming of the nervous system with fear, therefore it is a total loss of consciousness with instinct. It is then the upper hand of animal consciousness over the mind.

  5. Alternative energy- the REAL problem
The real trouble in all these emerging energy alternatives is that they threaten the huge incomes of current mega-corporations. Unless THEY can meter, tax and profit from it we(the little people) will never get our hands on it. Unless, of course, we do something to change the status quo of big business smashing innovation to protect profits and power(to control, not energy).

And that’s my weekly sermon. All done. TY, and good nite 🙂

    1. “Green” is better….LOL
That is why we as consumers are being inundated with “Green” products to buy. The marketing is subtle and VERY effective.

Example: Years ago we drank water from the tap (faucet) and thought nothing of it. Back then the idea we should carry around a canteen of water and pay for the water in it when we went out would have been a crazy stupid laughable idea! “Hey are we crossing the desert?” or “You expecting trouble man?” Yeah, well look at us today…we buy filtered water for the same price as a soda,(!) and we carry it around with us when we go out, why? So we are “hydrated”! LOL!!! DAMN how did that creep up on us?? Are we THAT dumb…well yes, we are for exactly the aforementioned reason.

Oh, and by the way – where do all those PLASTIC empty water bottles go and all the oil required to make them? Funny how we don’t hear about that huh? You bet! Look you have to buy CFLs and leave the bottled water market alone pal!

Want to save the Earth, lower your “carbon footprint”? Simple, start drinking water like we all used to – from the tap and get a water filter if needed.

      Cheers

      1. Water water everywhere…

Oh, and by the way – where do all those PLASTIC empty water bottles go and all the oil required to make them? Funny how we don’t hear about that huh?
Actually, environmental groups have been campaigning against plastic water bottles for years, and have recently succeeded in persuading the Canadian government to ban brand water in municipal buildings. Coca-Cola et al are kicking up a big stink about it of course, but common sense is finally winning. Tap water and bulk water coolers for company employees is what the Canadian govt is enforcing.

Alas, no one’s considering the problems of flourinated water and other toxins in public drinking water. Damned if we do, damned if we don’t really.

        1. Bottled water bottles
One Oz company recently stopped producing bottled water for the very reason that they considered the disposal of so many plastic bottles into landfill was creating a very big problem. Don’t remember the name of the company, but I applaud them for their decision.

          Regards, Kathrinn

        2. Tap water – no good – Part of the plan…
Alas, no one’s considering the problems of flourinated water and other toxins in public drinking water. Damned if we do, damned if we don’t really.
Ah…the ole “Toxins-in-the-Public-Drinking-Water ploy”…(evil laugh) That worked better than we ever imagined. bwahahaha, bwahahaha

Believe me if it was possible to make a dollar in getting people to drink the “Toxic” public drinking water there would be a subtle marketing campaign that would do just that.

Rick, think of this. Not so long ago a country to have a viable economy and growth meant either colonies (Australia) and/or wars of conquest. All throughout history its this country invading that country with pillaging, plundering et al all in support of its economy. This significant economic fact led to the fall of many empires – “No More Worlds to Conquer” A Great.

The Roman Empire collapsed when the input of plundered wealth stopped.

What do I hear you say? “Rome fell because of the lead pipes, the lead pipes!!”

Actually, no it was not – read your history. “Lead water pipes were still in common use in the early 20th century and remain in many households (today)”

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_pipe

Back to the present. Nowadays while there are no more Sucking-the-Life out of colonies and wars of conquest the concept is still very much alive and doing quite well. Enter, Big Business, the modern way to conquer pillage and plunder. It means things like public water is bad and bottled water, that you pay a hundred times more for, is good.

          Fluorinated water…evil…bad…really?

Now where does all these health problems that people in the west get comes from?

Timmy: I know! I know! call on me Mr Cotter!

Mr Cotter: Okay Timmy tell us.

Timmy: Its from all the evil communist Fluorinated water and other toxins that is in our public drinking water!

Mr Cotter: That’s right Timmy, Processed foods and the other crap you stuff in your gob for breakfast every day is made with vitamins, and is good for you too! So get Mum to buy more, and more…bwahahaha

You, me and everyone hardly pays anything for public water – so where the profit in that? Gawrsh Mickey! Get with the program! bwahahaha

See where I’m going with that? Its perfect! So subtle, pure manipulation and the beauty and genius of it is no one even suspects what is going on.

          Cheers

          1. Didn’t know that! LOL
Thanks Kathrinn, good catch! Its ironic I didn’t catch that one as my own moniker is “TIHZ HO”…

I especially get a kick out of seeing girls paying $10 for a Evian purse sprayer.

            WTF??

That’s right – its just water in a spray can…ok, Evian water!

What does it do? It hydrates the skin, silly.

Leaving out the “Marketbabble” it just makes the skin wet.

That just goes on to prove my point on how effective marketing can be for EVERYTHING and how it infests our thinking like a virus.

            Cheers

          2. Dude!
Come on, that “EVIAN/NAIVE” thing is old!!

It came out from this movie, which of course helps me to deduct that you’re not exactly a member of the Generation X 😉

          3. silly boys and girls
When I drink my local tap water, which is supposedly so much better than the bottled stuff, I get the runs 1 or 2 times a week.

  6. Neanderthals vs Homo Sapiens
Maybe the only evolutionary advantage we had that excelled the attributes of our extinct cousins, was not our “intelligence” but our ability to resist and adapt to a wide variety of diseases.
