Is a Third X-Files Movie On the Way?

Chris Carter, creator of The X-Files, has returned to the genre with force this year: news has emerged that he’s writing the pilot episode of a supernatural series titled The After for Amazon Studios, which takes place in the aftermath of the apocalypse. Carter is also currently working on a top-secret, paranoia-fueled project with AMC, and writing a tenth season of The X-Files (to be told in comic form). And in a new interview with Empire, the master of paranormal story-telling admitted that he’s keen for a third movie in the series, with a return to the original X-Files mythology:

It’s really up to Twentieth Century Fox, whether they have the will to do it. I think all of us are interested in putting the band back together. I have an idea for a third movie in my head. The colonisation date has passed [in the series, the date for the alien invasion was December 22, 2012 – Ed.] and that is something we wouldn’t ignore. For the second movie, we only had the budget for a standalone story, but we want to go back to the mythology.

Personally, I’d love to see a return to the original mythology, with its absence in the second movie – as I mentioned in my review – not helping to get people excited about the film.

Before we get too excited though, it might be worth noting that in a separate interview with Vulture, posted yesterday, Carter said quite the opposite, explaining that “even though a lot of people would like to see a third movie, I don’t think there’s a whole lot we need to elaborate on.”

Trust no-one.
