Pixar’s Zoetrope

I bow at the altar of Pixar, and love the techniques of animation, so really enjoyed this…thought Grailers would enjoy it too:

When I watch this, I start pondering how reality might differ to what we perceive (ie. in this case, multiple models in freeze-frame, vs perception of multiple moving models).

    1. Who cares?

…that if i ever make an animated movie i will not win the academy award for it 😛

Who cares, as long as the result makes you happy? that’s the Pixar philosophy right there, amigo 🙂

      *Sigh* if only…

Well…..since my execution is slated for dawn…
…my final words are thus: I miss the old 2D flat animation, when it was art. Nowadays people always expect a 3D movie, which is not Pixar’s fault. I remember when the first Toy Story movie came out and it was amazing, no one had ever seen anything like it. If only that were true today. I grew up, as I’m sure most of you did, on movies like Lion King, and Aladdin, and so on. And it wasn’t about the animation for me, but the story. If Toy Story 3 wins an award, which it will, it should be for the story. But now all 3D movies just have the same feel to them lately. They fit a cookie-cutter process and formula that meets the needs for the audience, but not as art. The stories I grew up with inspired me to become an artist and to work in computer graphics today. I have used the type software Pixar uses (similar not the same obviously). I would love to make a movie that wasn’t 3D but old school animation just to see how it would fair, not to win, but to remind people of what we lost. And I have found that over the years I am not the only one who feels this way. Pixar can keep doin’ what it’s doin’, just want something a little more, oh wait…

  1. computer graphics
In the nicest possible way I blame The Daily Grail for rekindling my interest in computer graphics – I did an MSc in Computer Graphics and Virtual Environments back in 1995. Since then professionally I have been away from graphics coding. However I have been very fortunate in being given some new training in Java; and using the learning process as an excuse to write a do-it-yourself high end animation package so that anyone with a bit of time can produce state of the art animations.

The tool is progressing and when finished I will be releasing it for free as a part of the “stone soup” philosophy.

It uses the brilliant (and free) PovRay – http://www.povray.org/ as its rendering engine. If you are interested in this sort of thing check out the software and work through the tutorial. You will amaze yourself with what anyone (even me without any artistic ability) and it is immensely satisfying to raytrace ones own images.

There is also the tool blender (http://www.blender.org/) which is again free and really is as good as anything which pixar and Industrial Light and Magic use. All it needs is artistic ability. You can also export objects from Blender and render then in Pov.

I hope with this post I can interest a few other people to look at these things.

    Best wishes Paolo
