Apparitional Experiences: A Primer
Posted by Greg at 14:05, 08 Jan 2010According to this recent Pew poll, roughly 1 in 5 Americans claim to have had ghostly experiences. Though I'm sadly not part of the 18% (or even American, so all-round fail on that one), the topic does interest me greatly. In a happy coincidence, at the end of last year Public Parapsychology posted an intelligent, multi-part primer on apparitional experiences - if the topic interests you then it's definitely worth a read:
- Introduction
- Types of Apparitions
- Characteristics of Apparitions
- Spontaneous Cases and Field Research
- Apparitions in the Laboratory
- Characteristics of Experiencers
- Theories and Perspectives on Apparitions
- Conclusion
Anybody out there got an 'apparitional experience' of their own to share?

Thanks for the plug.
I just posted a seventh installment on theories of apparitional experiences at Public Parapsychlogy (www.publicparapsychology.org), and over the weekend, I'll likely post the conclusion. Following that, we'll have the primer available in a downloadable pdf.

Hi Annalisa,
Thanks for the update, I've edited the story to add the latest instalment. Let us know when the conclusion/PDF is available.
Kind regards,
Greg

thanks for posting this and the links Greg. All I got to do now is make the time to read it all.
Also thanks annalisa for your effort. I have had a couple of experiences myself and these articles help put some perspective to them.

The hauntings that have been taking place at my father's ranch since the early 1980's are subject nearly every parameter discussed in this file.

I don't see anything in this treatise about the spooks' notorious facility with electronics. The haint at the ranch for instance could turn on and off the televison set. How is it that a civil war era dressed ghost knows how to work modern electronics? The also reminds one of the "mind machines you can build" thing which technique employed just the schematics of electronics in order to achieve radionic effects. I have built some of those, and they do work more often than not. It is both funny and creepy sometimes. If radionic effects can be had by simply focusing on electronic "traces" then this may also explain how ghosts manage to manipulate TV remotes.
