1. Secret Tunnels in the Giza Plateau?
For the record, the interview with my friend Boris Said (who died 10 years ago) has to be taken with a grain of salt, since *some* of those suspected tunnels turned out not to be what we thought. There’s no question many things remain to be found beneath the Plateau (as the nearby villagers well know; they’ve been digging down beneath their floors for some years now), but it certainly doesn’t appear there are any tunnels leading from the Sphinx to the Great Pyramid, as many thought, or subterranean temples (as some of the illustrations suggests). But much else–no doubt.

1. secret sponsor?
Do you mean Zahi, or Boris? I can’t speak for Zahi (although I do know high-level people at A.R.E. were behind him for long stretches), but Boris had various investors backing him. (At one point he even met with Rupert Murdoch, but nothing came of it.)

1. I meant Boris
He speaks in that linked interview of a secret investor. It probably wasn’t Murdoch, since the differences with Fox is what caused the animosity between him & Dr. Joseph Schor.

1. investors
No, I didn’t mean to suggest anything actually came of that meeting with Murdoch, because nothing did. (BTW, when I asked Boris why Murdoch might have wanted to invest in something like this, he said, “Because Murdoch is a mason.” Make of that what you will.) If I recall, there were a couple other investors after the falling out with Schor–one, a doctor in New Jersey, and a rich woman in New York. There could have been others, but I doubt it.

There’s way more to this story than I can say here (just too involved)–but as the interview shows, Boris did start shifting his research more over to the sonic properties of the Great Pyramid in later years. He once remarked, “What we’re finding in the King’s Chamber is more important than any Hall of Records”-or words to that effect. But after Boris died, virtually all those findings and computer read-outs vanished. I don’t think anything conspiratorial was involved, just it was lost track of (I do think the Univ. of Washington had some of it, though).

1. Believing Boris
Note: I’ve edited this post as I mixed up Boris with someone else from the late 1990s Egyptology brouhaha. I apologise for that.

There was good reason for Boris to be excited — the Osiris Shaft, ground penetrating radar indicating hollows around the Sphinx, the shafts in the Great Pyramid. We were all caught up in Giza Fever back then. Even though much of what’s discussed in the article may seem far-fetched knowing what we know now, it’s still premature to write off the existence of unknown subterranean tunnels and chambers. Heck, we still haven’t gone any further in the Khufu Pyramid shafts! So Boris may be proven right in the future.

1. Clarification
I didn’t mean to suggest we need to be skeptical of Boris’s claims because of either exaggeration or questionable motives, or some such thing, so my apologies for any misunderstanding. It’s just that at the time of this interview (I’m guessing probably around 2000 or so), some of the key facts about the Plateau weren’t known clearly. Things were pretty murky about some of these sites. I know for a fact that there was digging and tunneling going on in the Great Pyramid, under Zahi’s supervision, at least in the area of the King’s Chamber (I even have a photograph of that somewhere, I believe). But we never found out what Zahi found, if anything. And as Greg knows, I was present at the Tomb of Osiris “discovery” in 1997, and indeed it seemed like there was a tunnel extending out of one corner of that subterranean wall, which headed in the direction of the Great Pyramid. Most of us thought–hoped–it would lead to something special; but when they put a remote robot camera up through it, it came to a dead end, as I recall. But that only was known later on. We also hoped there might be a tunnel extending down below the sarcophagus lid in the direction of the Sphinx, but that turned out to be a false start, too. So don’t think poorly of Boris because of my miscommunications–he was a great guy, and though he fell prey to some of the same fantasies most of the rest of us did around that time (just as did Hawass and Mark Lehner did earlier on, I might add), he was right about things more often than he was wrong.

1. Writing itself…
I call dibs on Mothman Erotica! My 1st novel shall be “The Warmth of Indrid Cold” :P
If only you could find a way to put a character named ‘Woody’ into it…
