Not much fortean stuff today, but something for everyone. Enjoy.

Thanks Greg.

Quote of the Day:

You can drive your Prius and type on your iPad, but if we leave you in the dark, you will shit your pants.

Memo to Hollywood: give Guillermo del Toro a blank chequebook. Sounds like a guy I could sit and have many’a’beer with.

“Reason over emotion is bullshit, absolute bullshit… We suffocate ourselves in rules. I find fantasy liberating.”

He pretty much has one now that James Cameron, flush from Avatar’s mega success, is producing the HP Lovecraft adaptation. You should give Jim a call for TDG projects. 😉 I bet the Mexican govt is kicking itself for not bankrolling Pan’s Labyrinth (del Toro moved it to Spain).

I’d pay to see del Toro debate fantasy/myth/fairy tales with Dawkins.

  2. Anyone else…….
Anyone else struck by the first two images from Tibet in the referenced article? I kept seeing something familiar in them and it finally dawned on me what it was: A striking Egyptian influence, or memory.

The first image, of the palace: Look at the central, reddish-brown colored structure. Same shape as the entrance to the Temple at Luxor, and to other Egyptian temples and gates.

Image 2: The group of seated women. Their hair looks for all the world like that seen in Egyptian images of court women. Same rounded design, same plaited coif.

I dunno, maybe I’m reading too much into it, but it certainly looks like some form of relationship must have existed at one time.

    1. The (less than) right angle
Many ancient buildings were forced to use battered (sloped) sides in order to be structurally sound. We are used to modern structural steel buildings with thin curtain walls. The Tibetans would have had to have utilized stone and brick for their multistory work, which means thick bases for load bearing and sloping walls for stability.

This is also why pyramids are so prevalent in ancient cultures. It was the only way to build something massive. Doesn’t rule out your theory, but it does provide an alternate explanation.

  3. Stone the crows
I once saw a crow hiding scraps of food in a hole in the ground, and then it covered the stash with a tuft of grass/dirt. Another crow kept a look out nearby, and when other birds came over to see what was going on, they were chased away.

Although crows in my part of the world are actually ravens, they’re just called “little crows”. The larger crows are only found in northern Australia.
