Australian UFO Hoax

Many of you may have seen the ‘Australian UFO Wave’ website over the past month or so, with its “sensational” footage of UFOs and aliens being ‘reported’ across Australia. After much skepticism from the UFO research community (and I mean researchers, not gullible believers), not least due to the fact that all reports were anonymous, a new and unexpected development has arisen. Apparently, the Australian UFO Wave was “an experimental digital video project” , funded by the Australian Film Commission (we’ll be seeing this on the current affairs programs soon):

Between June and mid-August 2006 thirty-one clips of UFOs were created. The UFO videos were distributed over the internet via websites and video podcasts. Writers crafted background stories for the sightings, and answered thousands of e-mails using a fictional persona. The process, reactions and responses were recorded for a forthcoming documentary.

The project was hugely successful, being viewed by many millions of people. Very few people suspected that the clips were manufactured. Gradually, the level of plausibility was reduced, but only when the last two clips were uploaded did a large number of people get suspicious. It’s also worth noting that two of the UFO clips we distributed were quite genuine – and no researcher was able to pick which two they were.

The creators state their belief that the project was “not a hoax or deception, but an immersive artwork”. I guess that would depend on your sense of humour. I can see their point, but if I was a UFO researcher with limited time and resources, and I had spent some time on this, I’d be pretty ticked off. Not to mention that it just furthers the field of ufology as one that cannot be trusted, despite there being some excellent researchers out there who have fascinating data.

Why don’t they hoax results for anti-cancer and anti-AIDS drugs instead? Make doctors and scientists to look like fools. “Ha ha, they thought this retro-viral drug was real and could really cure AIDS! The joke’s on them!” Yeah, a barrel of laughs.

    *sigh*

It’s just so tiring to see serious UFO research constantly belittled, ridiculed or used as “immersive art”. People will look at this and say, “see how easy it is to hoax UFOs? That means all UFOs are hoaxes!” People don’t like to think about the universe being a hell of a lot bigger than their petty little materialistic world of 9-5 jobs, grocery shopping, new shoes and what’s on television tonight. Their lives are exist on a grain of sand on a beach a zillion miles long, yet the arrogant little muggles think they know the entire beach.

And do decent UFOlogists deserve to be jerked around like that? Most of them pay for their research out of their own pockets.

The saddest thing is the news reports will ignore the fact that two of the cases used are genuine, and focus instead on how people got sucked in by the hoaxes. If they weren’t blinded by the light of their televisions, they’d be able to walk outside and see how many stars there are in the night sky …

    BUT

Hopefully this will hone a UFO researcher’s detective skills, and help people to recognise hoaxes when they see one. Considering the complexity of hoaxes these days, the ability to produce special fx equalling Spielberg, it’s getting harder and harder …

    1. UFO’s and UFO’s
i reckon there are two kinds of UFO’s.

The one kind of UFO is the ‘mechanics of the Universe’ and they are workers who fix things like the hole in the ozone layer ..hopefully stop asteroids .. and generally do good work. and btw are human.

The other kind of UFO’s that has Alien type figures are creations of not so good entities that want to control the world and the people in it.

      Am i being dramatic?

  2. I wonder …
if it’s an attempt to distract us (once again) from something else that may be happening, or is about to happen? I would suggest perhaps we should ‘watch this space’ (no pun intended)!

    1. maybe the government is
maybe the government is bringing out new technology and testing it before our noses. They need to spend the tax dollars to make fools of us. This society does not know how to manage its resources.

    2. On the other hand,
perhaps it’s just a very pointed example of how many dweebs there are claiming to see UFO’s when in fact they’ve just been over-indulging in scotch, ‘shrooms or some other mind-altering chemical.

It’s a question of belief, isn’t it? Those who believe won’t be dissuaded and those who don’t will need a kick in the head from Jabba the Hut before they consider changing their minds. The last sentence in Greg’s post comes closer to the mark than some might wish because the perception that the field of Ufology is untrustworthy only gets strengthened by a farce like this and those “excellent researchers out there who have fascinating data” will be pretty much ignored as long as large numbers of people can get suckered in this easily, not to mention those people who get fooled by crap so obvious that nobody but the most gullible would fall for it.

It defies any concept of rational probability to suggest that there isn’t Life Out There, but where is it, and what possible interest could it have in us? We’ve had radio and pretty good telescopes for awhile now; I think we can with some confidence assert that there’s no intelligent and technologically advanced life within a radius of 100 light-years. That’s only a large distance to us; in terms of the size of the universe it is meaningless…if there were some race sufficiently advanced to get here from some greater distance what exactly would or could they have in common with us?

In any case, if some of these researchers are put out by this then good for them. Perhaps a higher level of skepticism will cut down on the amount of absurd nonsense floating about, leaving some room for genuine evidence, if such exists. For all the cameras in the world, so many photos look laughably poor.

      Cheers

      So many idiots…so little time.

      1. Raving mad
lol yes everyone who claims to see ufo’s and aliens are all raving their heads off .. including government. After reading Graham Hancock’s ‘supernatural’ it’s kinda all making sense now.

There may be huge government investment in these little machines that are supposedly seen. They have claimed Mars after all …
also, there seems to be a strange twist in pyschology here as a ‘cover up’. It’s not us .. its them (those green men) ah but meanwhile back at the ranch ….

Also, as Binro says, there are pretty good telescopes today – even discover 3 new ‘planets’ but funny how they cannot pick up one UFO!

Saying that ‘the good ufo’s .. the mechanics of the universe’ operate in another dimension and are not meant to be seen by us – it’s only when they slip into our dimension that we see them, rarely. They do not want any contact with us (we smell)

um .. no im not raving!

        1. you know Caryn………….
you gotta laugh…..the internet is a funny place. 10 to 14 years ago it was very imature. Nobody really knew what it’s potential was. Information was suddenly available, in your home, that was other wise impossible to track down. Many people were afraid of it and many thought it was just a medium of rubbish. Still today many stay away from it. More from ignorance then any other reason. There was a time between 1994 and 1997 when access to information that was not really meant to be spread over the world was. Now you had to be looking to find it.But it was there and Many were looking and finding it. But then certain organisations realised that this could be a threat to the status quo. Then the censorship started. More like a mass mis-information and dis-information began. Now it is like the biggest maze ever concieved to try and filter truth from fiction. But there are die hards out there who have been there from the beginning.

Now people are funny too. From age 14 to 21 they know everything and are indistuctable. From 21 to 28 they have done it all and are fully experienced. from 28 to 35 they realise they didn’t know everything and should start to consider a home and family. From 35 to 42 they battle with their own demons and try to make ends meet. From 42 to 49, if they are still with their betrothed, they deal with their own children who are now at the know it all stage.

It takes many years to filter out trash from non-trash. And it is easy to say that it’s all crap but many people have spent a very long time to do this and bring this to people who would other wise not bother to look. But the answer is whether you are capable or interested enough to search for the truth.

          1. Wise words thefloppy1

            Best regards
