Sunday Funnies: TESCREAL Turkey

Hope our American readers had a happy Thanksgiving day this weekend.

For this Sunday’s cartoon I decided to combine two weird American obsessions: the promotion of personal robots by tech companies, and deep-frying turkey.

Srsly, I’ve seen so many videos of deep-fying accidents gone horribly wrong, I can only think either that shit tastes freaking delicious, or—just like personal robots—it seems like a good idea only on the surface.

Like many Gen-Xers, I grew up watching reruns of The Jetsons and Buck Rogers in the 31st century. I’m a Star Wars fan and a Sci-Fi nerd, and I can admit there’s a part of me who finds the idea of robotic assistants appealing. But not only do I think the technology is nowhere near mature enough to let these super expensive gadgets irrupt into our society, I’m also aware that the companies and entrepreneurs that want to convince us we need a robot in our lives, are the same people pursuing a misanthropic agenda dictated by a philosophy known as TESCREAL.

Should people be forbidden to deep-fry a turkey? Not if they are willing to follow a minimum of safety regulations, to ensure they don’t burn down their house and whole neighborhood in the process. Likewise, tech companies ought to be forced to adhere to strict safety regulations, to ensure their products are not damaging their clients.

Unfortunately, we’re not seeing that, because those tech companies have figured out it is easier to ask forgiveness than permission, if you grease the palms of enough politicians.

When it comes to technologies that put the entire society at risk, maybe we should all go cold turkey.
