News Briefs 29-08-2005

Stuffed in a sock and placed in a shoebox that was tucked inside a plastic bag and cunningly hidden at the back of my wardrobe, I managed to find a spare half hour to do the news.

  • Hurricane Katrina has been downgraded to a category 4, but it’s still threatening New Orleans and the city’s residents have been ordered to evacuate.
  • Duncan Burden, managing director of Priory Publications (GB) Ltd, responds to a Phenomena Magazine editorial that cynically dismissed the Maranatha Puzzle.
  • Chilean authorities have broken up the Colonia Dignidad commune, home to escaped Nazis and sympathisers. That’s Hitler in the senior-citizen-buggie, attempting one last getaway.
  • The mysterious flight, and the subsequent crash in Scotland, of Hitler’s deputy Fuhrer, Rudolf Hess.
  • 95-year-old Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is leaving the UK in disgust because of the country’s involvement in the Iraq war. If you’re a follower in the UK, I wouldn’t worry, he threatened the same thing when John Lennon first dated Yoko.
  • I’ll repost this because the images are incredible. Mysterious lights in the New Mexico sky are eerily similar to the Phoenix Lights. The Phoenix Lights is a book by Lynne D. Kitei (Amazon US or UK).
  • I don’t know what my little sister is up to in Tasmania, but bright orange lights were seen in the skies of Hobart on Saturday night.
  • Bill’s uncle knows the truth about Roswell, and it backs up Nick Redfern’s claims, found in his book Body Snatchers In The Desert (Amazon US or UK).
  • Gary McKinnon, the nerd who saw too much. I have evidence McKinnon is telling white lies, and I’ll post it in my blog soon. I feel sorry for the guy actually.
  • One of Britain’s leading paranormal experts is offering classes on how to contact your guardian angel. Personally, I leave a bowl of milk out on the back porch at night.
  • Paul Solem says he’s the only white man to have been accepted by traditional Hopi chiefs, and he’s telling tales of flying saucers. You can read about Hopi prophecy here.
  • Tom Cruise says he has lived before, and believes his current life is one of the least satisfying. Yes Tom, Days Of Thunder was pretty bad.
  • Tales of explorers being eaten by cannibals or losing toes to frostbite never scared Michael Palin — they encouraged him.
  • Another ex-Python, Terry Gilliam, has a new film out, The Brothers Grimm. Here’s what he says about it.
  • National Geographic has a great website for the original Grimms’ Fairy Tales.
  • Who was Thomas Malory, the man who created the legend of Lancelot? Maybe he was Tom Cruise in a past life.
  • Can a punk rocker named Rat Scabies find the Holy Grail? Rat Scabies and the Holy Grail, by Christopher Dawes (Amazon US or UK). Looks like Tool’s Maynard James Keenan has serious competition, Greg.
  • With a name like Bodelwyddan Castle, it’s got to be haunted.
  • Victorian scientists attempted to squash Daniel Home, but the quest to contact the spirit world moves on. The First Psychic, by Peter Lamont, is an excellent book about Daniel Home (Amazon US or UK).

Quote of the Day:

There was something awesome in the thought of the solitary mortal standing by the open window and summoning in from the gloom outside the spirits of the nether world.

  1. Katrina down to 4
    Hi Rick,
I am so pleased that Katrina has been downgraded to 4, although that is still very bad.I believe it will be crossing the coast round about now.
Lets all send the people there good thoughts and the wish that they remain safe.

I agree about Gary McKinnon,I don’t think he is a criminal.Hope it works out for him.

Can you tell me what writings of Conan Doyle the quote is from?

I really don’t think a bowl of milk will be sufficient for your guardian angel.I heard that they really like Coco-Pops.Maybe you could put some in the milk.

Good stories about the ex-Pythons.In fact, all good stories. Some I will save.
    Thanks mate,

    shadows

    1. Windy city
Ironically, we’re experiencing very strong storm winds down here in Melbourne. It’s been blustery the past few days, and the wind is abominable right now, but so far no storm.

I’m sure the neighbourhood cats won’t be around to drink my offering of milk tonight. 😉

      1. windy……….huh……..
hi Rico, been very windy here for 2 days…… I was really hoping for some rain so my oats don’t wane away and die. But no….it’s been a year of high pressure systems creating wind and dryness.
lets ‘THINK’ for better conditions next year.
BTW, shadows must be getting this wind good and proper. Living on a peninsula can get pretty blowy…
Being on the west side of the great divide gives a complete different aspect of wheather than the east side….funny that….

        1. What direction are you gettin
What direction are you getting the winds from? Down here, we’ve been getting Northerlies, which are typically dry and blustery. The wind’s also been shifting to Easterlies, which are also dry and blustery. The Easterly wind is typical of El Nino, too. It’s a pain, what little rain we get is dried up by these blasted winds. It’s hell for hayfever too, which is why I’m all doped up on (supposedly) non-drowsy anti-histamines. Uhoh, Kat will kick my butt for taking those things. What was that bacteria you mentioned I should keep in my fridge and sprinkle on my weetbix, Kat?

Are you up Canberra way, Flop? I hear the drought’s been pretty bad up there.

          1. directions…….Rico………
started out from south-east then east then north-east today.
moisture today but only a sprinkle. dried befor it hit the ground.
I’m in between Warwick and Toowoomba….little place called Allora.
Darling Downs….bloody driest year on record nearly.
Little hint on keeping body happy….laugh if you want but it has kept me sickness free for many years…….spin clockwise quickly for 21 times in the morning and at night…you may wish to start off doing only what you can without falling over or throwing up….
I wouldn’t say if it didn’t work……O, and keep your arms out horizontal.

          2. weetbix
Weetbix – Is that something you eat? Sounds like you need to add something tasty to it.

Shadows is the one who ordered me to take the refrigerated bugs – they’re whatever it is that makes milk into yogurt, and you buy ’em at a health food store.

I’ll add, eating pollen is supposed to be good for allergies. You buy it at the health food store too, and sprinkle it on your cereal.

            Kat
