News Briefs 06-10-2008

Allow me to lend a machete to your intellectual thicket.

Quote of the Day:

…In fact, let us not mince words… The Management is terrible! We’ve had a string of embezzelers, frauds, liars and lunatics making a string of catastrophic decisions. This is plain fact. But who elected them? It was you! You who elected these people! You who gave them the power to make your decisions for you! While I’ll admit that anyone can make a mistake once, to go on making the same lethal errors century after century seems to me nothing short of deliberate. You have encouraged these malicious incompetents, who have made your working life a shambles. You have accepted without question their senseless orders. You have allowed them to fill your workspace with dangerous and unproven machines. You could have stopped them. All you had to say was ‘No’….

  1. Creativity
The research showing a relationship between ‘perceived loss of control’ and ‘magical thinking’ is interesting in light of the importance of ‘liminality’ to the experience of ‘paranormal phenomena’ (See Hansen’s The Trickster and the Paranormal – Amazon US and UK).

Maybe it’s just that, when we can’t make sense of something ‘objectively’, we explore more ‘subjective’ options.

  2. Kudos!
A particularly delicious and appropriate Cup today!

While we’ve been fascinating ourselves with our amusing toys and busy labors, and satisfying ourselves with our consensual stories about the world and its past, the Great Fecund Dark has always loomed at our backs. beyond the campfire.

  3. Re Cave paintings
Interesting article, Kat – thank you.

Regarding the fact that paintings were made in caves in areas where there was greatest resonance (as reported in another news item recently), I am interested as to why the artists did this.

Finding the most resonant areas would have been a simple matter, but why choose them to display their art?

Does anyone have any ideas on this, please?

    Regards, Kathinn

    1. To mark places which
To mark places which optimally enhance ritual sounds. Google archaeo-acoustics or acoustic archaeology (a fascinating new field of archaeology) for more info.

I can recommend Stone Age Soundtracks by Paul Devereaux (Amazon US & UK)

    2. multi-media effect?
A first thought is that, perhaps, the artists were using their paintings to make people stand in these places, and experience the sound effects at the same time.

It is not how fast you go
it is when you get there.

      1. it would be part of the rituals
The resonance, combined with chantings, drums and the possible ingestion of power plants, would have resulted in a truly powerful entheogenic experience. The cave thus became a portal to the spirit world.

        1. Thanks Perceval, Earthling and RPJ
You were all very helpful, so thank you for taking the time to respond to my question.

Will chase up the archaeo-acoustics, Perceval – didn’t know it was a different branch of knowledge. Thanks so much.

          Best wishes to all, Kathrinn
