Has del Toro found his Hobbit?
Posted by red pill junkie at 17:44, 31 May 2008Good news everyone! It seems that the leading contestant to bag (get it? Bag!) the role of Bilbo in the upcoming movies to be directed by Guillermo del Toro is none other than James McAvoy:
“A number of names have privately been doing the rounds, including Daniel Radcliffe and Jack Black but James is the one the film’s bosses really want,” the source tells the paper. “They’re expected to have talks with him soon so hopefully it could be confirmed in the not too distant future.”
JACK BLACK??!! For all that is pure and sacred in this world, please NO! James will do an splendid job thankyouverymuch.
And if you read the Q&A chat session that I posted last thursday, you already know that Sir Ian McKellen is returning as Gandalf (Yaaaay!). Not only that, but from what was hinted of the responses given by Guillermo and Peter Jackson, on the second movie they're planning to link the story of 'The Hobbit' with the events that unfold on the LOTR trilogy; in other words they will try to cover a 60 year timespan in which we may see some of the characters that later appear on the trilogy films directed by Jackson—Strider living at Rivendell perhaps? Saruman?—and all the original actors that portrayed those characters will be asked to join in this new project.
So, all in all, I say those movies are starting with the right foot, hairy and all :-)

Hm. I guess I was hoping they'd hire an actual little person finally. *shrug* Maybe they'll give him some make up that actually makes him look like a hobbit. :)

He also did a very good job s Tumnnus on the first Narnia movie.
Or were you expecting that they hired a REAL FAUN for that one?? ;-)
Besides, they couldn't do that—use a real little person—because they have to conform with some of the ideas already portrayed in the first movies, so that people feel some sort of continuity; although Guillermo has said he is going to make some changes with the elves, the goblins, the eagles and the wargs—the eagles and other animals talk in "The Hobbit".
Have faith ;-)
PS: And you know what? I just remembered Peter Jackson DID hire a lot of real little people as extras in the Shire scenes. All the hobbit children were real little people.

Heh. Yeah! The one from Pan's Labyrinth could use more work. :)
You're right about the continuity, of course. Glad you pointed out the memory of the children.
The LOTR trilogy didn't do much to bolster my faith to begin with, so ... we'll see.
My reasons to dislike those movies are ultimately unimportant. Chalk it up to differences in taste. I do, however, hope The Hobbit is better.

Hey now! Jack's already displayed his credentials as an Elf. Funny stuff. :)
Kind regards,

Oh yes! I'm totally taking my nephews to see that movie... not! :-)
I'm cool with Jack Black. 'School of Rock' is a modern classic, and he did a very good job in Jackson's 'King Kong'; and with 'KungFu Panda' he is gonna be Lord of the Box Office.
But I see his face and his acting style and it doesn't ring to Bilboish to me, you know? Maybe he could be one of the dwarfs! ;-)
PS: Because seriously, this guy, as Bilbo? For real?? ;-)
