Australian actor Heath Ledger found dead

This is a shocking news: Australian actor and Oscar-nominee Heath Ledger, who made several great performances in Brokeback Mountain, Monster Ball -aswell as other very good performances in blockbusters like The Patriot and A Knight's Tale- was found naked and dead in an apartment; authorities suspect a drug overdose as the case.

He was 28.

This is a disappointing story for me, becaue I'm really looking forward to seeing Batman: Dark Knight this year to see if Ledger could topple Jack Nicholson's performance as The Joker. I thought this young man had a very promising career. Unfortunately it won't be so.

Rest in Peace.

PS: Hmm, it seems my blog is becoming something of an obituary. I'll try to make my next entry more cheerful, I promise.

________
[UPDATE/ January 24th] For those of you who think discussing about Ledger's deaths should be reserved to Pink Press websites, I strongely urge you to read an excellent article by Loren Coleman, who managed to find a thin but powerful fortean thread in Ledger's sad demise.

You are quite right, Tinseltown is ruthless. Some actors and actresses can cope with it, some can't.

From what I've read in the newspaper this morning, it seemed Ledger was suffering from extreme anxiety. In one of his latest interviews the journalist noticed the man could barely sit still without more than a few minutes, and had to take breaks in the balcony to smoke a cigarette. He complained that although physically he was exhausted, his mind keep racing at full speed and he could barely sleep.

Very sad.

I have freelanced on film and tv sets for the last decade. I must say something here about this actor's death. On film sets, a lot of the crew members do drugs. It is not uncommon to see someone smoke a joint whenever they want and pass it around. I find we live in a time where it is the button press culture. To satisfy press this button. It is an epidemic of button pressing out there. Everyone wants there passions satisfied now! Not later. I want it now! In this decade I have come to know way too many people who are on anti depressants. There is a pill for every disease, concern, and whim. Sit down, detach yourself from your circumstances, have a breather, and more importantly a middle ground. I suppose Ledger and Brad Renfro will not be the only ones being killed by this anti culture. I was working on Bait a few years ago, a porsche skids to a hault in front of me, stops within inches of touching me, Jamie Foxx gets out, throws me the keys, I miss, and he blows mariguana smoke in my face, all the while a paid duty police officer is within sight. I worked on a show somewhere, a person from a foreign country was caught inhaling by a security guard, who storms off. Yes the foreigner approaches me and asks "What is the punishment for being found smoking weed in Canada?" My answer, "fifty dollar fine."
"Then why was the guard mad?" he asks.
"Cause he was on the job and not on weed." Face it, if I did go to the boss and complained about someone smoking up on the job, the boss would be on something, my co-workers would be on something. Everybody is on something. We are in that anti culture era where satisfaction must be now, not later. I predict, more of these young, up and coming actors will die off before their time. Why? Because of the long hours on these jobs, access to way too many drugs, and the lack of middle ground in this era.

I think we're part of the "Microwave" generation. If something takes you more than 10 min to obtain, then it is not worth the effort.

I would even suggest this is the reason some (not all of course) marriages fail nowadays. I'm not married, but I do believe a long-term commitmen to another human being takes a lot of effort, and it is not always going to be nice Kodak moments: there are going to be fights, and tears -- and even vomits and feces-- but if you REALLY love that other person, you will learn to endure it.

Because you'll know it is worth ir.

But what do I know? I'm just some idiot who is a big participant of the Microwave Generation.
