Support the Spirit Molecule

A fortnight ago I mentioned that the documentary The Spirit Molecule, about the shamanic drug DMT, was about to premiere at Alex Grey’s Chapel of Sacred Mirrors and would be heading to DVD soon (and included a trailer in my post for your viewing pleasure). The premiere was by all accounts an excellent event; now you can help make the DVD release a reality by pledging a small amount via Kickstarter.com to ensure the project is successful. You can give just a dollar or two as a donation, or for $15 and up you can get various DVD plus gift packages.

The producers are looking to raise $17,000 in pledges by Tuesday Oct 26 – currently they’re almost halfway there. If you like the subject matter, and want to support good documentaries on ‘alternative’ topics, make sure you seriously consider getting behind the project. As I’ve mentioned here before with my own fund raising, I think this is the way of the future – getting behind projects that are meaningful and passionate with grassroots support, rather than the same old boring mainstream crap funded by people with no clue. Here’s the blurb for the doco:

THE SPIRIT MOLECULE investigates dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a naturally occurring psychoactive compound, which exists in humans, and numerous species of plants and animals. The documentary traces Dr. Rick Strassman’s government-sanctioned, human DMT research, leading to the study’s potential impact through its inconceivable realizations. A closer examination of DMT’s effects through the lens of traditionally opposed concepts, science and spirituality, THE SPIRIT MOLECULE unravels the connections between cutting-edge neuroscience, quantum physics and human spirituality.

As Dr. Strassman’s story unfolds, a variety of experts weigh-in on the intriguing questions raised by the research and the resulting theories, including the synthesis of DMT in our brain’s pineal gland, its link to near-death & alien-abduction experiences, similarities to the “many-worlds” interpretation of quantum theory and the uncanny likeness to ancient religious texts describing prophets with DMT-like experiences. The experts offer a comprehensive collection of information, opinions, and speculation to contextualize the nature of the DMT experience, and its role in human culture and the life force of our planet.

Due to the profound nature, and sensory phantasmagoria, of the DMT experience, the visual landscape of the film features stunning visualizations from Scott Draves & the Electric Sheep), as well as cutting-edge motion graphics that demonstrate DMT’s conceptual link to human evolution and construction of the universe. Additionally, stylized scenes reminiscent of Rod Sterling’s Twilight Zone bookends, Joe Rogan (actor/comedian) serves as tour guide, navigating the expansive realms of Dr. Strassman’s DMT universe.

The Spirit Molecule, a simple molecule with enormous implications. The film’s subtle combination of science, spirituality, and philosophy results in an abundance of incredible ideas and theories that could alter the way we understand the nature of reality and our relationship to it.

Looking forward to seeing this one, some great participants interviewed and a fascinating topic (very interested also in the possible iPhone app that gives access to the many hours of raw interview footage!).
