Quote of the Day:

“Do not go gentle into that good night. Old age should burn and rave at close of day. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

Dylan Thomas

  1. Sod’s Law
I know this as Sodd’s law. I looked it up and in fact he gave three laws. They are as follows:

    Sodd’s First Law

When a person attempts a task, he or she will be thwarted in that task by the unconscious intervention of some other presence (animate or inanimate). Nevertheless, some tasks are completed, since the intervening presence is itself attempting a task and is, of course, subject to interference.

    Sodd’s Second Law

Sooner or later, the worst possible set of circumstances is bound to occur.
Corollary -Any system must be designed to withstand the worst possible set of circumstances.

    Sodd’s Other Law

The degree of failure is in direct proportion to the effort expended and to the need for success

    1. Mis-anthropic Principle?
      Hi Neanderthal,

It occurred to me as I was reading your post that this subject ties in nicely to the discussion over conscious evolution and the “anthropic principle” the other day. (Intelligent Debate? by Greg,29th Sept.) Sod’s Law could easily be re-labelled the “mis-anthropic principle” and stand in direct opposition to the notion that the whole universe is there purely to bring about us.
Here we have, in so many words, the duality of good and evil, watered down somewhat for a more agnostic and materialistic audience and without the least little sniff of divinity unless one accpets the Spinozan claim that all things are God. What do you think?

      Regards, C
