Because of the havok created by their worst winter in 50 years, chinese authorities are advising millions of immigrant workers to abandon their travel plans for their annual New Year trip home — according to their lunar calendar, this will be the year of the Earth Rat, although it seems to me this rat is in danger of freezing to death!
And speaking of rodents, tomorrow as many of you know is Groundhog Day, an annual celebration held at the town of Punxsutawney Pennsylvania, where people gather to see if Punxsutawney Phil, Grady, Jimmy and Sir Walter Wally are able to predict the end of winter. Is there any truth in any of this? Cosmic Log's Alan Boyle
takes a look on the scientific facts and fiction about animals and their ability to predict the weather.
Mmm... maybe the chinese government should send a delegate to Punxsutawney, although they'd better not bring any snacks! My advise to them would be to give Punxsutawney Phil and his friends some mexican tamales instead, as it is tradition around here to eat them to celebrate El Día de la Candelaria (Candlemass Day in the church calendar); I bet that with that Phil would give a much more favourable forecast :-)
[UPDATE] It seems that the Pennsylvania rodent predicted 6 more weeks of winter. See? Why doesn't everyone listen to me? Next time bring some tamales people!
BTW, Am I the only one who thinks Bill Murray's Ground Hog Day is a superb movie disguised as a simple comedy?

Rain's coming!
I once had a tabby cat which went quite silly 3 days before rain. She would climb the curtains or flyscreens and grin at us from the top of the curtain pelmet. As it doesn't rain very often where I live in Australia, this bizarre behaviour was distinctly noticeable - and she was always right!
My whippet detected a thunderstorm 57 miles away one evening (I learned about the storm the following day).
Regards, Kathrinn
the rain cat, LOL
Sadly I'm currently petless right now (you see, that's the only reason I would like to have money, so I could have a nice big house with a lot of dogs in it) so I must depend on the weather forecast of the newspaper :-(

Depending on weather forecasts
Eh! Might as well read the horoscope in your daily paper. ;P
LOL
Well, at least I have the comfort that the weather newsman is house-broken.
Or at least I HOPE he is >:3

Actually, the NWS is not too bad on their website (nws.noaa.gov). That is if you live anywhere close to the US. And, as is to be expected from these capitalist pigs, it is free to use for anyone around the world.
They have very good info on hurricanes, and good radar and satellite stuff.
Also there is weatherunderground.com, they give half way decent info for many places around the world.
Then again, if you have a window, you can open it to check the current weather.
I like to read horoscopes at the end of the day, to get a chuckle out of how wrong they were. My local newspaper's horoscops even have disclaimers - in the style of "you might make new friends today, or perhaps not".

Earth Rat's Sun Sign is what?
How about like:
"It was a good decision you made when you decided not to make one" haha...
freezing here in North Carolina............
did get some snow, then some rain, then some ice ---(that was way cool, icycles all over the trees - wow beautiful) then some cloudy days...ahgggg...then some half cloudy shy sunny days..now we are in for a few sunny days with low temps.
I have been freakin cold. I have had a long winter. I walked outside today and looked at the pastures and the horses....pretty....I was thinking about the groundhogs that live in the upper pasture and when I would see them again. I was happy to read this post of Red's.
So is Chucky going to come out and chuck it's teeth - look at its shadow and run? They call them wood chucks in the South.
What is the Earth Rat's Sun sign? An Aquarius? Or? Is that Ground hog's sign? or both? I think I was a Cock ......1957????? Check your Chinese place mats for the sign and year. They usually have them printed in red...
I will write soon..still in recovery mode.

Hi Colette
I hope you're feeling better and close to full recovery :-)
I did check once, and according to the chinese calendar, I appear to be a Water Ox...
Which makes perfect sense! Why? Because when I was a kid I was a huge fan of The Flintstones, and both Fred and Barney were part of the Loyal Order of Water Buffalos.
See? It's all part of a grand plan... in technicolor :-)
