World Heritage Status

After reading about calls for various ancient ruins and wilderness areas around the world to be granted World Heritage Status, I just came up with a brilliant idea:

How about we grant World Heritage Status to the entire Earth? =D

Sign your name, and I'll submit a petition to the UN.

Oh that's lovely, Rick

And just the sort of thing you would think of.
I am going to suggest your name for First President when we become a Republic.
Which won't be far off after the election.

Thoughts on World Heritage

In the dusty past I/we used the old historic district trick it gave property owners incentive to save areas that needed saving. Given how hard it is to save a planet we might save parts of it might have a chance. But then again I'm all for saving as much of this pale blue dot as we can. Say does any one know if an old archaeologist could move to OZ, I'm drought tolerant and drink beer?

You're halfway to being Aussie already

There's no beer drought, that's for sure. ;)

Well thats good to hear

Well if there is beer then I if I could be there I would be there not here.

I think you could

Bill, write to the Oz Embassy in Washington.
Oz needs older professional people at present.Sounds like you're in that category.
Can't see why you wouldn't qualify.
Let us know so if you need help that maybe we can supply .
I think your best bet would be Anubis2.We will ask him on your behalf.
I can't wait.

moving on

I will write, in the vein of the post Machu Picu (sp) was damaged during a beer commercial filming. it comes down to matching local concern to preservation. When you in OZ were building your laws to protect your amazing prehistory many of them came from CEQA (the California environmental Quality Act)in Europe they shovel pass what I could stop and look at for months (but given the 50 year guide line for things if I stand too long in one place, there is a mountain of paperwork to fill out). Saving sites is harder work than excavating them and keeping them safe over time harder. And I do love my beer but falling super models just aren't solid enough to damage a sun stone but a stout crane and some drunken teamsters can do the job.

Ruin status

What does world heritage status for ruins mean? You are not allowed to ruin the ruins?

There are 3 kinds of people. Those who can count, and those who cannot.

lol I meant to say ancient

lol I meant to say ancient monuments, but most of them are in ruins which is why they need to be protected. Baalbek, Antonine Wall, etc. But you'd be surprised how badly tourists (and locals) treat historic sites.

locals too

I heard that parts of the Chinese Wall has been carried away by locals. They need stones to build houses. The part we see in the news when some dignitary visits, and that the tourists see, has been carefully restored. Not that I've been there.
