Near the Massachusetts border at least 100 stone piles (about 3 feet high and 4 feet wide) lie on private land in this northern Rhode Island town of about 10,600 people. Developers are pressing to put 122 house lots on the location which has stirred much controversy over whether or not this is a sacred burial ground. No mention of any human remains being found yet. Detractors say that they are merely piles of rocks from early colonial agricultural operations. State experts have stated they are keeping watch on the site for further finds which may or may not confirm local Native American tribe's concerns.

Interesting
Pam these aren't the walls that were built there many years ago with each individual rock having a cell-like structure are they? No, they are just piles of rocks.
I remember seeing somewhere about these walls and about what was supposed to be a Phoenecian furnace or something.
Maybe I have it wrong.
It is a difficult choice to make.....build houses or wait and see if something else is found.
It reminds me a little of the farmers here who find aboriginal artifacts or even bones on their land.I have heard that they just bulldoze them in as they fear that the aborigines will make a land claim.
Well they owned all the land for a long time before the farmers did, they have to have some rights.

No, not a furnace
I recall that. This is not the same place. I think if they want to know they should do a systematic dismantling of several of the mounds to ascertain what, if anything, is under or around them. They are not that huge and several groups could do it in a relatively short period of time. But, I imagine there are people with a tidy sum of money invested in the developers and want to push on with clearing the land for houses.
Here is a link for an article about an ancient smelting pit in North America. http://www.iwaynet.net/~wdc/ -----------------------------Truth is stranger than fiction.
That's a good link
Thanks Pam
