Google Earth Tour
Posted by Greg at 11:50, 21 Jul 2005For those flying about in Google Earth, here are some locations of interest that I've collected thus far (and some that I'm seeking). Feel free to add a comment with any new ones you find, corrections to any mistakes I've made, and also requests for places not found yet - I will edit and update to blog as I find time.
You should be able to cut and paste the co-ordinates straight into Google Earth to go to each landmark. Some are great to look at (Teotihuacan, GW Masonic Memorial), others not really much to see apart from the surrounding landscape (Stonehenge):

Greg, I have never told this to anyone before but when I see numbers my eyes just glaze over and I go into a sort of trance until some kind soul removes them.
You probably don't know this, but there are 3 kinds of people in the world...those who can count and those who can't.
My son said he can see into my backyard and see our car and knows if we are home or not, saves him a phone call.
My earthgoogle does not work anyway. It loads and loads and loads and then it says it is installing and then something says it cannot support something. Can't remember exactly, not being much of a nerd.
I'll have another go when I am feeling better, got a heavy cold.

Hi
Well i just about can make out my skylight 1.4x0.7 m on my flat roof, its funny, not every place on the globe is available in that much detail though. And the images are not new, over here these must at least be 9 months old as theres no central station (re)construction- in sight. A fun gimmick for most, a tool for some.

Some time ago, Google bought another company that owns a lot of satellite image data. This is largely what you see in these maps. The people who make the satellites, and launch and operate them, want money for the data. There are size considerations as well I'm sure.
And let's face it: some of the lower resolution areas, like the one where I live, are just not all that interesting.

Hi Floppy,
Very funny floppy, seriously i think its more a question of potential interest , wellknown places of great beauty- big cities. Over here, Rotterdam we have a very large harbour, 20 miles stretch and its an impressive sight from above.
Considering there'd be higher resolutions available for the spooks, its only a matter of time when targets will be hit from space (golden eye).
Suspected troublemaker floppy ? Tell me, you seem to know more, as for my head, i won't worry about it.

Ok I went to the coordinates of the Nazca Lines and well there were no shapes like they show on the TLC and Discovery Channel programs and it made me quite dissapointed. I want to see the giant pictures! Also, I was wondering if anyone knows where the Pompeii ruins are? What else.....Macchu Picchu was pretty cool...once I found it of course, it's on top of the squiggly lines. I couldn't find the damn statues on Easter Island. The Native Canadian w/ Ipod was totally freaky! (It's a Native Canadian because it's above the 49th Parallel and in Canada!) Oh and I see that we have the Pyramid of the Sun, but where is the pyramid of the Moon? Overall, great tour so far!

Can anyone give me a correct Lat/Long co-ordinate for Avebury henge circle? Between books and the Internet I now have 7 and they are all different - some quite considerably. This doesn't help if one is trying to do accurate research. So far taking an average of the ones I have found is the best I can work with.
Your help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Greg,
I really enjoyed visiting all those google earth landmarks, places of interest, historical, etc. I think(I'm not sure) but think I found Mt. Ararat if you wish to add it to your places. You will want to check it first to make sure it's the right place. Some of the landmarks around are various named Ararat places. The coordinates are 39 42' 26.82 N and 44 17'40.99 E.
thanks again,

Hi.......
In fact there is something like google solar system ..
Check out this http://www.shatters.net/celestia/ it's a complete free space simulation that lets you explore our universe in three dimensions... It has very cool add ons... you will love it. it has over 500.000+ stars you can fly to.. following the voyayers on their tour etc etc. you can go back in time.. and follow the tunguska meteor impact... or watch the comet impact on jupiter....
There are also cool download links for space ships / vehicles and even a complete star trek / star wars / or alien universe you can download and discovering it same way like google earth works...
I hope I could help you with this info...

Found that a friend had Google Earth and was checking out some of the above co-ordinates the other day. Had a look at your posting about seeing a 'face' just north of Woomera, and you're quite right!!
It looks like a big cat to me. Now why would someone draw a big cat's head on our desert landscape? Very interesting.

Kathrinn, I thought it looked more reptilian. But then I am a sci-fi freak so my mind tends to indentify with what it knows best. My cat is like a big ball of white fluff so he doesn't even look like a cat.so no comparison there.
I'm pretty sure the image is a quarry and the top and right of head is under water but then again....it is a clear depiction so the chances of it being by accident is like winning lotto. But people win lotto every week.
